The Chiasm That Shows Alma’s Conversion
The Chiasm That Shows Alma’s Conversion
(Hidden Patterns in Scripture Series)
π§ Opening
In the last video I talked about the moment when I first discovered something called chiasmus in scripture.
A literary pattern ancient writers often used.
Today I want to show you one of the most beautiful examples.
It comes from the story of Alma the Younger’s conversion in the Book of Mormon.
And once you see the pattern, the story becomes even more powerful.
π What Chiasmus Looks Like
Chiasmus is a mirror pattern.
It works like this:
A
B
C
D
C
B
A
The center is usually the most important idea.
Ancient Hebrew writers used this structure to highlight their message.
πΏ Alma’s Conversion Pattern
If we simplify Alma’s experience in Alma 36, it looks something like this:
A — Alma rebels against God
B — Alma is confronted by an angel
C — Alma feels deep fear and guilt
D — Alma cries out for Jesus Christ
C — Alma feels overwhelming joy
B — Alma begins preaching Christ
A — Alma spends his life serving God
Notice the mirror:
rebellion → redemption
fear → joy
lost → found
✨ The Center of the Pattern
And right in the middle of the entire story is this moment.
Alma says he remembered his father’s teaching about Jesus Christ.
Then he cried out for mercy.
That moment is the turning point.
The center of the chiasm.
The center of the story.
The center of the gospel.
Christ.
πͺΆ A Talking Feather Thought
That’s one of the things I love about chiasmus.
Ancient writers weren’t just arranging words.
They were pointing to the heart of their message.
And over and over again, the center is the same.
Jesus Christ.
π± Why This Matters
For me, discovering patterns like this changed the way I read scripture.
It made me realize something.
These writings were often crafted very carefully.
There’s beauty in the structure.
And sometimes the structure itself teaches the message.
π The Invitation
If you want to try something interesting, go read Alma 36.
Slow down.
Look for the mirrored ideas.
You may discover something beautiful hidden in the way the story is told.
