BRIGHAM, THE HANDCARTS, AND THE HARSH TRUTH
▶️ WORTH YOUR TIME – CHECK THIS OUT
(This video tells the real story of the pioneers—and exactly why this blog exists.)
BRIGHAM, THE HANDCARTS, AND THE HARSH TRUTH
We honor the pioneers.
We love them. Some of us are their descendants.
But if we love them, we also owe them the truth.
The official story we’ve been told for years? Faithful handcart Saints pushed forward in the harsh winter of 1856, blessed by God, while heroic rescuers saved as many as they could.
The real story is harder—and more important.
🔥 THE HANDCART PLAN – A DISASTER WAITING TO HAPPEN
The 1856 Willie and Martin handcart companies weren’t sent west by faith alone.
They were sent west to save money.
Brigham Young initiated the handcart system to cut immigration costs.
The result? Over 200 dead—more than the infamous Donner Party.
The Nemenhah warned us about this kind of misplaced zeal:
🪶 “They will think themselves righteous because of their works, but their hearts will be far from Me.”(Mohrhohnahyah 15:6)
📜 CONTRADICTIONS & SHIFTED BLAME
Brigham’s letters in August 1856 show he knew the late-season handcart companies were coming.
But after Apostle Franklin D. Richards arrived in October, warning of their peril, Brigham later claimed ignorance and shifted blame to other leaders.
Why?
To protect his leadership image and keep the faith of the Saints.
The Nemenhah saw this kind of thing coming long before Nauvoo or Utah:
🪶 “They shall add to the words of the seer, and take away the plainness, to justify their own works.” (Mohrhohnahyah 8:11)
💰 MONEY OVER MERCY
The handcart plan wasn’t just about faith; it was about finances.
While poor Saints buried their children along the trail, Brigham collected tithing aggressively and built grand mansions.
The Nemenhah didn’t mince words about this kind of hypocrisy:
🪶 “They are a goodly people, strong to build, yet they will not hear My voice.” (Tsihohnayah Ahkehkthihm 14:4)
⚠️ PROPHECY USED AS PRESSURE
Apostle Franklin D. Richards prophesied that the companies would arrive safely in Zion, urging them forward despite harsh conditions.
This swayed many to ignore better judgment and Levi Savage’s warnings to delay travel.
Blind trust in prophetic declarations—without seeking the Lord personally—has always been dangerous.
The Nemenhah’s reminder:
🪶 “My Spirit they will not seek, though they say they do.” (Second Tsi Muhayl 8, composite)
🌾 STARVATION AND SUFFERING
This all happened during grasshopper infestations and droughts.
Members dug roots, begged for food, and buried loved ones while church leaders prioritized tithing and personal wealth.
The Lord warned long ago what happens when men call their own precepts holy:
🪶 “They shall change the ordinances and call them holy, but I have not required them.” (Second Tsi Muhayl 8, composite)
🛑 HISTORY REWRITTEN
Official church history later softened or erased inconvenient facts—blaming immigration leaders, glorifying Brigham’s “faith,” and omitting how resources were diverted for his own supplies.
The Nemenhah foresaw it:
🪶 “They will weary themselves with much building; Zion will wait for another day.” (Mohrhohnahyah)
Because Zion isn’t built on spin. It’s built on truth.
🕊️ THE REAL LESSON – SEEK TRUTH YOURSELF
The speaker in this video worked inside church headquarters.
He saw firsthand how “faith-promoting history” replaced honesty.
The message? Don’t just take their word for it.
Search. Pray. Ask the Lord directly—just like Joseph did in a grove of trees.
Because Zion will not be built on lies.
