The Test of Our Day – Will We Hear Him?
The Test of Our Day – Will We Hear Him? ๐️
I Love You, My Brothers and Sisters ❤️
Let me start by saying this: I love this church. I love the people who fill its pews every Sunday. My family and I have given our lives to the Savior, and I have felt His Spirit deeply in sacrament meetings, temples, and quiet home prayers.
This isn’t about tearing anyone down. It’s about lifting all of us a little closer to Him.
I’m just like you—trying to follow Jesus Christ with all my heart. And as I’ve prayed, something has become very clear to me:
Heber C. Kimball’s Warning for Our Day ⛅
One of my favorite quotes comes from Heber C. Kimball, an early apostle who stood by Joseph Smith through the darkest times. He gave this prophecy about the Latter-days:
“The time will come when no man nor woman will be able to endure on borrowed light.
Each will have to be guided by the light within themselves.”
And he added:
“The Saints will be tried as no people ever were before…
the test will be so severe that many will not endure.”
Think about that for a minute.
Kimball didn’t say, “Stay close to your leaders and you’ll be fine.” He said you will have to have your own light—your own connection to the Savior.
And that leads us to the real question:
What Is the Test? ๐️
Every generation has had one.
Adam & Eve’s test was a piece of fruit.
The Jews’ test was a carpenter from Nazareth.
Our test?
Will we recognize and follow the Savior’s voice—or will we trust borrowed light?
That’s exactly what Kimball was warning us about.
Joseph Smith’s Warning About Sin ๐
The Prophet Joseph once said there are two great reasons for sin:
Breaking the commandments of God (easy to see).
Being bound by the traditions of men (much harder to see).
The Savior made it simple:
“A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you.” (John 13:34)
And the Book of Mormon explains how we know what to do:
“If ye will enter in by the way, and receive the Holy Ghost, it will show unto you all things what ye should do.”
(2 Nephi 32:5)
That’s the test. Will we listen to the Holy Ghost and the Savior’s personal voice, or will we lean on someone else’s light?
Why It’s So Hard ๐ฅ
I get it. It’s hard to even look at something that challenges what we’ve been taught since Primary.
When I first started seeing things differently, I wrestled with bitterness. It felt like my whole world was shifting, and for a while, I was angry at everyone who “should have told me.”
But then the Lord whispered to me—so gently:
“This isn’t about them. It’s about Me. Follow Me.”
And when I let go of the anger, I started hearing Him more clearly than ever before.
Nephi warned us about this very moment:
“Cursed is he that putteth his trust in man, or maketh flesh his arm, or shall hearken unto the precepts of men, save their precepts shall be given by the power of the Holy Ghost.”
(2 Nephi 28:31)
That’s not anti-Church—that’s straight scripture.
The Golf Course Lessons ⛳
I’ve had some of my clearest moments with the Lord out on the golf course. Not in a chapel, not in a conference talk—just me, the fairway, and Him.
The Whisper Over a Putt
One morning, I stood over a short putt and felt a quiet nudge: “Stop. Breathe. Listen.”
I set my club down and just stood there. It had nothing to do with sinking the putt. It was about pausing long enough to hear Him. That day, I learned that His voice often comes in the quiet moments—when we’re willing to stop and really listen.
Walking with Him on the Fairway
There were days when I could feel His presence beside me, almost like walking with an old friend. I’d talk to Him mid-round about my life, my worries, my family. Sometimes the answers came right there on the green. Sometimes they came later. But I felt Him.
Giving Up the Game
And then there was the day I knew it was time to let golf go. I loved the game, but I felt Him whisper, “It’s time to give this up so you can walk with Me even closer.”
It wasn’t easy, but since giving up golf, I’ve felt His voice clearer than ever. My prayers are sharper, my heart is softer. I think you’d see the change in me if you knew me back then.
A Gentle Invitation ๐
If you feel a little tug-of-war inside reading this, that’s okay. It means you care.
Just take it to Him.
Close your eyes.
Whisper His name.
Ask Him: “Lord, am I following You first?”
He will answer you. That’s His promise:
“Ask, and it shall be given unto you; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.”
(3 Nephi 14:7)
A Prayer for All of Us ๐️
Dear Lord,
We love You. We’re trying. Please help us see past our fears and traditions so we can hear Your voice more clearly. Bless every heart that reads this with peace, not anger. Teach us how to love like You love, and to follow You first, even when it’s hard.In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Your Turn ๐
If you feel something in your heart right now, even if it’s just a tiny warmth or a thought that says, “I should pray about this,”—please don’t ignore it. That’s Him. That’s the voice we’re all learning to follow.
