The Two Josephs: One Began It… One Will Finish It --- 2 Nephi 3
✨ The Two Josephs: One Began It… One Will Finish It
πͺΆ “A choice seer will I raise up out of the fruit of thy loins… his name shall be Joseph, and it shall be after the name of his father.”
—2 Nephi 3:7, 15
π± A Promise from Joseph of Egypt
In 2 Nephi 3, the prophet Lehi quotes the words of Joseph of Egypt—spoken thousands of years earlier. Joseph foresaw a future day when:
A great seer would arise from among his descendants
He would be named Joseph
His father would also be named Joseph
He would be like Moses, delivering God's word and gathering scattered Israel
π “And he shall do a work for the fruit of thy loins… bringing them to the knowledge of the covenants…”
(2 Nephi 3:7)
π¨ Joseph Smith: The Beginning of the Work
Most Latter-day Saints recognize this as a prophecy about Joseph Smith, and rightly so. He:
Was a seer, named Joseph, son of Joseph
Brought forth the Book of Mormon
Spoke with God and angels
Restored ordinances and scripture
But even Joseph Smith said:
“I am laying the foundation, and another will come to bring it to completion.”
π₯ President Kimball’s Vision of a Lamanite Prophet
President Spencer W. Kimball, speaking in the 1970s, prophesied boldly:
A Lamanite prophet would arise in the last days
He would be mighty in spirit and gather his people to Christ
The time would come when the remnant of Joseph would lead Zion
This was taught openly… until it wasn’t.
Later versions of Church manuals began removing references to this future Lamanite prophet. Even the chapter headings in the Book of Mormon changed.
π§Ύ Yes, They Changed It
Earlier LDS editions of the Book of Mormon does not reference Joseph Smith as being this Joseph.
πΎ Nemenhah Records: The Work Is Not Finished
The Nemenhah speak of this same promise. They honor Joseph Smith but also warn:
“Those who received the Restoration turned from the fullness… Yet the Lord used them for a time, for they were industrious and organized. But another shall yet come…”
—Tsihohnayah Chapter 14
They teach of:
A Peculiar Prophet to come from among the remnant
A future seer who walks in the fullness of the Spirit
A completion of the Lord’s great latter-day work
π “He shall be of the fruit of thy loins… and shall be esteemed highly among the fruit of thy loins.”
(2 Nephi 3:7)
π ️ The Two Josephs Side by Side
Prophetic Role | Fulfillment |
---|---|
First Joseph – Joseph Smith | Named Joseph, son of Joseph; translated the Book of Mormon; restored the Church |
Second Joseph – Yet to come | From the remnant of Joseph (Lamanite); completes the work, gathers Zion |
π️ What This Means for Us
• The prophecy of 2 Nephi 3 is not just past—it’s present and future
• We honor the first Joseph… but look for the second
• Zion will be led by the remnant of Joseph, as prophesied
• The Lord’s promises are not forgotten, even if edited by men

πΎ Final Thought
Jesus Himself was from the line of Joseph through Mary.
The last-day work will also come through Joseph.
From Joseph, to Joseph, to Zion.
Be watching.
Be ready.
Another is coming.
Forgive me, but out of habit I’m inclined to find the source of every attributed quote of Joseph; would you oblige to give me reference for “I am laying the foundation, and another will come to bring it to completion.” Would appreciate it thanks!
