πŸ•Š️ Charity: The Pure Love As Christ

πŸ•Š️ Charity: The Pure Love As Christ

πŸ“– Why This Blog
A friend recently asked me to clarify a phrase I used: “charity (the pure love as Christ, not just like Christ).” He wanted to know the difference between the two. This blog is my response to that question — and my attempt to open the scriptures wide on this subject. I welcome your thoughts in the comments below.

πŸ’‘ Like Christ vs. As Christ

Most of us grew up hearing that we should love “like Christ.” That is true and good. We look at His example — forgiving, serving, healing, washing feet, laying down His life. We try to copy Him.

But scripture pushes us further. Moroni calls charity “the pure love of Christ” (Moroni 7:47). That’s not imitation. That’s infusion. Not just copying His love, but being filled with His love until it overflows.

  • Like Christ = imitation. A pattern we attempt.

  • As Christ = participation. His Spirit in us, His love flowing through us.

That’s why Paul wrote: “The love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost (Romans 5:5). It is given, not manufactured.

πŸ“– Scripture Witnesses

Bible

  • “God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him” (1 John 4:16).

  • “The love of Christ constraineth us” (2 Corinthians 5:14). His love compels us from the inside out.

Book of Mormon

  • “Charity is the pure love of Christ, and it endureth forever” (Moroni 7:47).

  • “Love is bestowed upon all who are true followers of his Son” (Moroni 7:48). Notice — it is bestowed.

Doctrine and Covenants

  • “Let thy bowels be full of charity … and the doctrine of the priesthood shall distil upon thy soul as the dews from heaven” (D&C 121:45–46). Charity and heavenly power are inseparable.

  • “Clothe yourselves with the bond of charity” (D&C 88:125). The garment of Zion is love.

Nemenhah Records

  • “It is by charity that you shall discern the whisperings of the Haymehnay [Holy Ghost], for in this is the pure love as Christ, and without it, no man can build up Tsiahn [Zion]” (Tsihohnayah Ahkehkthihm 13:12).

  • “See that ye love one another with that love wherewith I love you, for this is not likeness only, but it is my Spirit in you” (Mohrhohnahyah 8:22).

🌿 Why the Difference Matters

Loving “like Christ” may keep us busy — but loving “as Christ” transforms us.

  • To love like Christ is effort.

  • To love as Christ is grace.

One copies; the other embodies. One runs out of fuel; the other never faileth (1 Cor. 13:8).

This is why Zion cannot be built without charity. It is not merely a command to imitate Jesus. It is a covenant to let His Spirit write love into our bones until it becomes our new nature.

πŸ™ Closing Thoughts

That’s how I see the difference between “like Christ” and “as Christ.” One is the shadow, the other is the substance. One is the practice, the other is the power.

But I’d love to hear your ideas. How do you understand charity — the pure love of Christ? Have you experienced moments when His love came through you in a way you knew wasn’t your own?
