๐พ Gathering Truth Wherever It Shines
๐พ Gathering Truth Wherever It Shines
I love the way Joseph put it. He didn’t stand up and tell us to shut out the Methodists, or the Presbyterians, or the philosophers. He said:
“One of the grand fundamental principles of Mormonism is to receive truth, let it come from whence it may.”(TPJS, p. 313)
And in another sermon he doubled down:
“We should gather all the good and true principles in the world and treasure them up, or we shall not come out true Mormons.” (HC 5:499)
That’s not just Joseph being polite—that’s the Restoration. The very foundation of what he gave us was: if it’s true, if it’s virtuous, if it’s praiseworthy—we seek after these things (Articles of Faith 13).
✨ Truth from All Quarters
The Nemenhah Records echo the same invitation:
“The Creator does speak through many nations and many tongues, and the wise do take counsel of every good thing, for the Haymehnay does whisper in the wind and in the voice of strangers.”
The point? If you’ve boxed God into your own system, you’re going to miss Him when He comes walking by in another tongue.
Even Paul said it plain: “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good” (1 Thess. 5:21). That’s the same spirit Joseph carried when he said Methodists and philosophers had things we could use.
๐️ Why It Matters Today
We live in a day when it’s easy to get stuck in our own echo chamber. The LDS manuals, the Protestant preachers, the YouTube influencers—they all want to corner the truth market. But Joseph said don’t do that. The Peacemaker said don’t do that. The Book of Mormon prophets said don’t do that.
Truth is bigger than any pulpit. It comes in songs, in the cry of the poor, in the wisdom of the grandmothers, in science, and yes, even sometimes in TikTok videos.
The Restoration wasn’t about shutting doors; it was about opening windows.
๐ Takeaway
If we want to be disciples of Christ, then every sunrise is a chance to say:
Lord, show me what’s true today.
Let me gather it up, wherever it lies.
And let me treasure it, so I can build Zion with it.
Joseph taught it. The Nemenhah echo it. The scriptures confirm it. And the Spirit whispers it still.
๐ The Most Important Thing
At the end of the day, books and studies and sermons can only take us so far. The greatest teacher is the Spirit of the Lord. The Savior Himself said His sheep hear His voice.
So when you rise in the morning, keep that prayer open:
“Lord, please let me know the truth on these things.”
If you walk in trust, without fear, the Holy Ghost will confirm to you what is true and what is not. That’s the real test—not whether it’s written in a manual, or shouted from a pulpit, or trending on social media. The key is hearing the voice of the Savior and letting Him teach you directly.
We can gather truth from everywhere—but we build our house only on Him.
