Jesus… the Extravagant
📝 Their Message (Summary)
Everywhere in creation the Artist reveals Himself. The waves of the sea—majestic, wild, dangerous, yet playful. The sand scattered with shells—delicate, intricate, the work of a jeweler. The sunlight that floods the earth every morning, golden and free. All of it points to the heart of Jesus: epic and intimate, generous and detailed, lavish in love.
John Eldredge reminds us: the extravagance is everywhere. At Cana, He didn’t just make wine—He made 908 bottles of the finest wine. Creation itself testifies to the same abundance: countless grains in a field, endless waves, gallons of sunshine, rivers that never stop flowing.
Jesus is not stingy. He is generous. He is celebratory. He is not religion, not stiff culture, not gold thrones or fog machines. He is the God of oceans and deserts, dragonflies and musk ox, laughter and midnight conversations. He gives Himself freely, in superabundance.
The New Testament shows Him offering His presence at every turn—on the road, at supper, late into the night, early in the morning. His gift is always Himself, His life poured out like the wine at Cana, like manna from heaven, like wheat multiplied in a field.
Jesus didn’t only give His life for mankind. He still gives His life to mankind. Every day.
🔥 My Reflection
This post makes me pause at the beauty I usually take for granted: the sunrise, the taste of water, the laughter of children, the power of the sea. All of it is Him saying again and again: I am generous. I am good. I give Myself to you.
How often have I confused church culture with Christ Himself? The reminder is clear: strip away the trappings and ask, “Is this the true personality of the God who paints the sky every morning?”
The thought that He is extravagant, even scandalous in generosity, shakes me. He doesn’t measure out life carefully. He floods it upon us, more than we can hold. And I realize—I need to receive Him as He is, not as I’ve boxed Him in.
🕊️ The Invitation
Today, stop and notice: the light on your face, the taste of water, the abundance in creation. Ask Jesus, “Show me Your heart in these gifts. Help me see You in Your extravagance.”
Then receive Him—not in scarcity, but in overflowing joy.
