🕊️ “His Voice, Not the Robe”
A Loving Message to My LDS Brothers and Sisters 🌿👂
To my dear friends and family in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—
I love you. 💛
I’ve walked with you for years. I’ve prayed with you, fasted with you, sung hymns with you, and felt the Spirit burn warm in those moments.
And it’s precisely because of that love that I need to speak honestly. This isn’t about bitterness. This is about truth, and about the Savior who still calls each of us by name. 🫶
👁️ A Familiar Pattern
Have you noticed how many Conference talks follow the same rhythm?
They begin with something real—
✨ a tragedy that touches the heart,
✨ a tender family moment,
✨ or a scripture story that awakens our souls.
Our hearts open. Many times the Spirit really is present in those beginnings.
Then, almost imperceptibly, the focus shifts.
👉 The story moves from Jesus to the Church system.
👉 From hearing His voice to trusting an institution.
👉 From personal discipleship to hierarchical loyalty.
Most of us never question it, because the emotions feel so good. For years, neither did I.
📖 The Bible: Jesus and the Blind Man
John 9 tells a story that gets right to the heart of it.
Jesus sees a man blind from birth. Instead of debating theology, He simply makes clay from spit and dirt, anoints the man’s eyes, and sends him to wash.
The man obeys—and returns seeing.
When the Pharisees interrogate him, he replies:
“Whether he be a sinner or not, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.”
— John 9:25
The miracle didn’t come through priesthood hierarchy. It wasn’t correlated. It wasn’t announced in conference.
⚡ It was personal.
⚡ It was direct.
⚡ It was Jesus.
And that’s exactly why the religious leaders were threatened.
📜 The Book of Mormon: The Arm of Flesh
Nephi’s words hit like a spiritual plumb line:
“Cursed is he that putteth his trust in the arm of flesh.”
— 2 Nephi 4:34
And again:
“They teach with their learning, and deny the Holy Ghost, which giveth utterance.”
— 2 Nephi 28:4
Lehi saw a man in a white robe who looked trustworthy, invited him to follow, and then led him into a dark and dreary waste (1 Nephi 8:5–8).
That isn’t a throwaway detail. It’s a prophetic warning: religious appearances can deceive.
The robe looks right. The voice sounds good. But if it’s not the Savior’s voice, the path grows dark.
✍️ JST: The Commandments of Men
Joseph Smith’s Inspired Translation of Matthew makes it plain:
“In vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.”
— JST Matthew 15:9
We have to be careful, friends. When “follow the prophet” or “stay in the boat” become unquestionable doctrines, we risk putting the words of men where the words of Christ should be.
Joseph restored a gospel of personal revelation and encountering God, not slogans and corporate messaging. He warned:
“If any man preach any other gospel than that which I have preached, he shall be cursed.”
— History of the Church 6:365
🌿 Nemenhah: Teaching the Real Source
The Nemenhah prophets spoke the same truth centuries earlier:
“Wherefore, if you teach not your little ones to seek the Haymehnay to confirm in them all things, teach them nothing at all beyond the providing of their provender or the making of their clothing or shelter.”
— Tsi Muhayl 5:51
“Teach them to seek the commission of the Peacemaker… for none other may do it. And this is the only way whereby He does admit His sons and daughters into His ministry.”
— Tsi Muhayl 5:53–54
The Haymehnay (Holy Spirit of Promise) is the true confirmer—not committees.
The Peacemaker (Christ) gives the call—not headquarters.
The true pattern has always been direct connection to heaven, not dependency on mortal mediators.
❤️ My Honest Feelings
For many years, I loved those big Conference moments. I admired certain leaders deeply. I loved Elder Holland’s talks in particular—his fire, his emotion, his way of making the gospel feel alive.
Then came a day I’ll never forget.
Elder Holland came to speak, and we were all told to stand and wait for his arrival.
And we waited.
Forty-five minutes.
Hundreds of us. Missionaries, leaders, members—all standing silently until he entered.
When he finally did, there was this hushed awe. Not for the Savior—but for the man. And something deep inside me stirred uneasily.
Not long after, fifty missionaries went home. I don’t know all their reasons, but I’ve often wondered how many were spiritually exhausted, crushed by expectations and the weight of appearances that day.
At the time, I brushed it aside. I thought, “Well, he’s a powerful speaker. Maybe this is just how things are done.”
But over time, I began to see through it. 👁️🗨️
I started recognizing how emotion and authority were being blended in ways that felt spiritual—but subtly redirected reverence away from Christ toward charismatic men.
That moment with Elder Holland was one of the first cracks in the wall for me. It helped me start telling the difference between the warmth of the Spirit and the pull of personality and power.
🧭 The Real Test
The Savior Himself gave the test:
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”
— John 10:27
Not “My sheep hear the prophet’s voice.”
Not “My sheep stand in reverent silence for Church authorities.”
They hear Him.
And Moroni reaffirmed it:
“And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.”
— Moroni 10:5
Truth is confirmed by the Holy Ghost—not conference talks, not press releases, not slogans.
The Nemenhah add:
“Teach your little ones to seek the Haymehnay to confirm in them all things.”
— Tsi Muhayl 5:51
The pattern is consistent. The Lord never outsourced His voice.
✨ A Loving Invitation
My dear brothers and sisters, if you’ve ever felt that uneasy stirring I did—if you’ve noticed the emotional pivot but didn’t have words for it—this is for you. 🫂
You’re not crazy. You’re not apostate for wanting Jesus above all else.
👉 Keep the good.
👉 Let go of unquestioned traditions.
👉 Tune your heart to His living voice.
The Savior is still calling His sheep. His voice still cuts through the noise. And His love for you is deeper and more personal than any institution can offer. 🕊️❤️
