“Oh Say What Is Church?”
📝 Their Message (Summary)
Elder Eyring recently taught that sustaining church leaders requires “unshakable faith” that the Lord called them — and that failing to do so will bring “sorrow… and losses beyond your power to imagine.” He counseled members not even to think of their leaders’ human weakness.
That standard feels foreign when compared to scripture. Joseph Smith openly published his failings. Paul rebuked Peter to his face. The Lord Himself corrected prophets throughout scripture. And yet, modern Saints are taught that even thinkingof weakness in leadership is spiritually dangerous.
Meanwhile, the institutional “church” of today looks very little like the New Testament community:
Apostles then had no purse or scrip, were beaten and jailed.
Apostles now are given homes, flights, security, and applause.
The early church met as family in homes, with Christ alive in their midst.
Our modern church centers on structures, policies, and sustaining votes.
So what is church? Is it temples of granite and glass, or is it two or three gathered in His name? (Matthew 18:20). Is it assignment-based “ministering,” or the living body of Christ where love flows freely?
Scripture paints a picture of a radiant church — holy, without blemish (Ephesians 5:27). Not built by programs, but by Jesus Himself. Not managed by handbooks, but by the Spirit. Not sustained by votes, but by sacrifice, repentance, and love.
The “church” Jesus is building cannot be contained in an institution. It appears wherever people abide in Him and walk as family in His Kingdom. It may be in a chapel, but it may also be in a living room, or on a mountaintop, or at a kitchen table. The true church is not in buildings, but in Him.
🔥 My Reflection
This post feels like a long exhale. For years I tied “church” to programs, callings, and sustaining votes. And yet, Jesus spoke of church only twice — and both times He said He would build it.
That means the pressure is off the institution and back on Him. It’s not about me sustaining an organization; it’s about me abiding in Christ.
And honestly, that makes me breathe easier. Because no matter how polished or broken our institutions become, the living church can’t be voted in or out. It is wherever His people love Him and love each other.
🕊️ The Invitation
Ask Jesus to redefine “church” for you. Let Him show you where He is building it in your life.
Stop measuring faith by attendance or callings, and begin measuring it by how much of His Spirit you actually carry.
When you kneel in prayer, offer Him everything: “I am Yours. My family is Yours. My house is Yours.” That is the foundation of His true church.
