“What Is a Prophet of God?”

📝 Their Message (Summary)
The discussion I watched this week was LDS women calling for Heavenly Mother to take a more equal role in the church. My thought was simple: if they believe in a prophet, seer, and revelator who is led by God—why try to “change the culture”? If the prophet hasn’t received revelation on the matter, then to act without it is an admission that they don’t really believe he is receiving revelation.

And that question runs deeper: what is a prophet of God?

Joseph Smith taught:

“All the prophets had the Melchizedek Priesthood and were ordained by God Himself.” (TPJS 180)

Oliver Cowdery charged the Twelve:

“Never cease striving until you have seen God face to face… Your ordination is not full and complete till God has laid His hands upon you.” (DHC 2:195-196)

The scriptures say plainly:

“If there be a prophet among you, I the Lord will make Myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream.” (Num. 12:6)

The Lord’s pattern is direct ordination—face-to-face calling. Never succession by seniority, never a board vote.

But after Joseph’s death, the people chose Brigham Young by common consent. The famous “transfiguration” story—Brigham turning into Joseph before the saints—wasn’t recorded by anyone at the time. It only appeared in retellings years later, long after Nauvoo. The contemporary record shows speeches, persuasion, and politics—but no miracle.

So again: what is a prophet of God?

🔥 My Reflection
Scripture is consistent: every Abraham, every Isaac, every Jacob must covenant directly with God. Fathers may bless, but cannot confer divine sealing power. The priesthood that endures is “without father, without mother, without descent”—given by heaven alone (JST Heb. 7).

Christ Himself warned through Isaiah:

“This is a rebellious people… which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things.” (Isa. 30:9-10)

And Moroni saw our day:

“Your churches, yea, even every one, have become polluted.” (Mormon 8:36)

We Latter-day Gentiles have become content with smooth things, vague testimonies, and “opinions on Twitter” rather than open visions and the word of the Lord.

But salvation has never been collective. Zion has never been built by committees. Christ said plainly:

“I am the true vine… Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.” (John 15:1-4)

The role of a true prophet is not to manage programs. It is to call us back to Him.

🕊️ The Invitation

  • Ask the Lord what a prophet is—let Him teach you by His word and Spirit.

  • Don’t settle for a secondhand vine. Abide in Christ directly.

  • Remember: every soul has the same invitation. God is no respecter of persons.

📖 Scriptures to Ponder
Numbers 12:6 — The Lord makes Himself known to prophets.
DHC 2:195-196 — Oliver Cowdery’s charge to the Twelve.
John 14:23 — The Father and Son will make their abode with you.
John 15:1-8 — Christ is the true vine; without Him we can do nothing.
