The Hidden Pattern in King Benjamin’s Sermon

The Hidden Pattern in King Benjamin’s Sermon

(Hidden Patterns in Scripture Series)

🧭 Opening

In the last video we looked at Alma’s conversion and saw how ancient writers sometimes used a mirror structure called chiasmus.

Today I want to show you something even more fascinating.

King Benjamin’s famous sermon in the Book of Mormon appears to follow the same kind of pattern.

But on a much larger scale.

πŸ“œ The Setting

King Benjamin gathers his people together.

Families come and pitch their tents facing the temple.

Then he gives what might be one of the most powerful sermons in scripture.

The sermon stretches across several chapters.

But when you step back and look at the structure, something interesting appears.

The message builds toward a center point… and then mirrors back out.

🌿 A Simplified View of the Pattern

If we lay the ideas out simply, it looks something like this:

A — King Benjamin calls the people together
B — He teaches about service and humility
C — He warns about the natural man
D — He teaches about the coming of Christ
E — People cry for mercy and repentance
D — They covenant to follow Christ
C — They receive a mighty change of heart
B — They promise to serve God and each other
A — The people become the covenant people of Christ

The structure mirrors itself.

Everything points to the center moment.

 The Center of the Message

Right in the middle of this entire sermon is the moment when the people fall to the ground and cry out:

“Have mercy, and apply the atoning blood of Christ…”

That’s the turning point.

The center of the chiasm.

The center of the sermon.

The center of the gospel message.

Christ’s mercy.

πŸͺΆ A Talking Feather Thought

One thing I’ve noticed about these patterns is that the center almost always highlights the most important spiritual truth.

Ancient writers were guiding the reader.

Not just with words.

But with structure.

Almost like building a spiritual arrow pointing toward the heart of the message.

🌱 Why This Matters

When you start noticing patterns like this, scripture begins to open in new ways.

You realize these records weren’t just random collections of stories.

They were often carefully crafted.

Layered.

Thoughtfully arranged.

And sometimes the structure itself is trying to teach us something.

πŸŒ„ The Invitation

Next time you read King Benjamin’s sermon, slow down.

Look at how the ideas build toward repentance and the covenant to follow Christ.

Then watch how the message unfolds outward again.

It’s a beautiful pattern.

And it helps highlight the heart of the gospel.
