When Christ Came Again: The Nemenhah Record and the Visit of the Risen Lord
๐ชถ Lessons From Our Zoom Study – June 21, 2026
Most Christians know that after His resurrection, Jesus Christ appeared to His disciples in Jerusalem.
Many who believe the Book of Mormon also know that He later appeared to the Nephites in the Americas, as recorded in the Book of Mormon in 3 Nephi.
But what if there was another record?
What if another people also recorded a visit from the risen Christ?
That is one of the remarkable claims of the Nemenhah Records.
What Are the Nemenhah Records?
The Nemenhah Records are a collection of Native American writings that claim to preserve the teachings, history, prophecies, and spiritual traditions of a people known as the Nemenhah.
Among the most fascinating portions of the record are accounts of visits by Ayahtsuhway Sahnhehmpeht (the Peacemaker), whom the records identify as the resurrected Jesus Christ.
Just as Christ visited the Nephites after His resurrection, the Nemenhah record teaches that He also visited other peoples of the Americas.
This idea should not surprise readers of the Book of Mormon.
Jesus Himself declared:
"Other sheep I have, which are not of this fold." (John 10:16)
And in 3 Nephi He explained that there were other peoples who would also hear His voice.
The Nemenhah Records claim to be one of those additional witnesses.
Whether a reader accepts that claim or not, the teachings themselves are worth examining.
The Same Christ
As we studied this week, one thing became very clear.
The Christ of the Nemenhah Records sounds remarkably like the Christ of the Book of Mormon.
Consider these teachings:
Be Filled With the Spirit
The Peacemaker taught:
"For none may see my face lest he be filled with the Haymehnay."
The Haymehnay is often described as the Holy Spirit or Holy Ghost.
The message is simple:
Before we can stand comfortably in His presence, we must first become filled with His Spirit.
That sounds very similar to the Doctrine of Christ found throughout the Book of Mormon.
Women and Service
One passage that touched our group deeply was:
"Behold, my daughters, by the nature of your creation, ye do serve all people."
The Peacemaker praises women for their service, compassion, and contributions to society.
As I thought about that verse, I thought about my wife Hiroko, Relief Society sisters, mothers, grandmothers, and countless women who quietly hold families and communities together.
The Lord does not diminish those gifts.
He honors them.
Let Your Life Become a Sacrament
One of the most beautiful teachings we read was this:
"Let your comings and your goings be in my name and in remembrance of me, that your lives may become a sacrament."
Think about that.
Not simply taking the sacrament.
Becoming the sacrament.
Living each day in remembrance of Christ.
Walking with Him.
Serving with Him.
Remembering Him in ordinary life.
True Religion
The Peacemaker then teaches:
"Visit the widow and judge the fatherless. Comfort the weary, feed the hungry, accommodate the destitute, and visit the captive."
Then He continues:
"For I was hungry and ye gave me to eat... I was sick and ye ministered unto me."
And when the people ask when they did these things for Him, He answers:
"When ye did it unto even the least of these my lambs, you have done it unto me."
That sounds almost identical to Matthew 25.
The message is timeless.
If you want to find Christ, serve His children.
Judge Less, Love More
Another powerful teaching from our study:
"Judge ye only by the Haymehnay."
And:
"Judge not, but do good continually."
The older I get, the more I appreciate that counsel.
There is plenty of judging in the world.
There is plenty of criticism.
The Peacemaker's answer is simple:
Love more.
Serve more.
Do good continually.
The Last Days
The Peacemaker also speaks of a future day when pride, deception, and corruption are exposed:
"I will cut off the wisdom of their wise ones and their fraud will I expose."
"Their pride I will also cut off."
"Lyings, deceivings, envyings, strifes, priestcrafts and whoredoms shall be done away."
Readers familiar with Isaiah will immediately recognize the pattern.
Pride grows.
False systems fail.
Human wisdom collapses.
Then God begins gathering His people.
The purpose is not destruction.
The purpose is gathering.
A Gathering Without Compulsion
One verse especially caught my attention:
"They shall gather in from all creations, but not in multitudes, and not driven or compelled."
What a beautiful idea.
People are not forced.
They are drawn.
They come because they hear the voice of the Shepherd.
The gathering begins in the heart long before it appears on a map.
What Did I Learn?
After several hours of discussion, I came away with one simple conclusion.
The central message of the Nemenhah visit is the same message found in the Book of Mormon:
Come unto Christ.
Receive His Spirit.
Serve others.
Care for the poor.
Love one another.
Walk with Him.
Prepare to see His face.
Whether reading 3 Nephi or the Nemenhah Records, I find myself drawn back to the same Savior.
And perhaps that is the most important thing of all.
Where Can You Find the Nemenhah Records?
The Nemenhah Records are available in several formats, including printed editions and Kindle editions through Amazon. Prices vary depending on the volume and format, but Kindle versions are generally among the least expensive ways to begin exploring the records.
If you are curious, start with:
The First Book of Ohuhgohuh (Main Record)
and compare it directly with:
3 Nephi 11–28
Read both prayerfully.
Then decide for yourself what you think.
As Moroni taught:
"Ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ."
That is still good advice.
