Restored Gospel vs. Post-Joseph LDS Theology

Restored Gospel vs. Post-Joseph LDS Theology

Baptism of the Holy Ghost

  • Restored Gospel: A distinct, divine baptism of fire that initiates godhood. Comes after spiritual rebirth, not automatically with confirmation.

  • LDS Post-Joseph: Equated with confirmation ordinance at age 8. Considered automatic when conferred by priesthood.

Truth Progression

  • Restored Gospel: Truth is revealed line upon line; seekers must shed lower truths and discern personally.

  • LDS Post-Joseph: Truth is stable and flows through prophetic succession; conformity with past teachings required.

Authority & Apostasy

  • Restored Gospel: Apostasy comes from trusting men without revelation. Spirit-led discernment is essential.

  • LDS Post-Joseph: Apostasy is defined as rejecting leaders. Loyalty to prophet ensures safety.

Multiple Mortalities

  • Restored Gospel: Mortality is one phase of many. Eternal lives allow for correction and growth.

  • LDS Post-Joseph: Single mortal life followed by final judgment. No teaching of return or reincarnation.

Endowment of Power

  • Restored Gospel: Comes from heaven to the sanctified. Tied to spiritual transformation, not temple rituals.

  • LDS Post-Joseph: Tied to temple ceremonies and hierarchical priesthood authority.

God's Justice & Timing

  • Restored Gospel: Souls sent to mortal lives suited to their readiness. God's mercy governs placement.

  • LDS Post-Joseph: Circumstances seen as tests. Pre-earth life acknowledged, but not emphasized.

Iniquity & Blindness

  • Restored Gospel: Iniquity = clinging to traditions over God's voice. Must shed inherited falsehoods.

  • LDS Post-Joseph: Iniquity = sinful behavior. Questioning leaders often considered rebellious.

Church vs. Kingdom

  • Restored Gospel: Gospel ≠ Church ≠ Kingdom. Kingdom is God's rule; Church is preparatory.

  • LDS Post-Joseph: Church = Kingdom = Gospel. Fullness found through institutional participation.

Suffering & Character

  • Restored Gospel: Trials are divine tools to refine godlike character. Suffering is redemptive.

  • LDS Post-Joseph: Trials are tests of obedience. Growth emphasized but not seen as mystical transformation.

Spiritual Equality

  • Restored Gospel: All may become prophets through Holy Ghost. No hierarchy in Zion.

  • LDS Post-Joseph: Prophet is a singular role. Hierarchical authority determines truth and access.
