๐Ÿชถ Songs of Zion

Music from the Porch, the Records, and the Journey

Over the years I have written hundreds of blog posts.

Some were about scripture.

Some were about Zion.

Some were about the Nemenhah Records.

Some were simply stories from a porch in Nevada as an old man tried to make sense of life, faith, family, and the Savior.

Recently, something unexpected happened.

I discovered music.

Not because I am a musician.

I'm not.

Not because I can sing.

I can't.

And certainly not because I ever imagined I would be creating songs in my seventies.

But I discovered that some things can be felt through music that are difficult to express in a blog post.

A song can sometimes reach the heart before the mind has a chance to argue.

So I began an experiment.

What would happen if the principles I have been writing about for years were put to music?

What would happen if the themes of gratitude, stewardship, Zion, charity, family, reconciliation, and following Christ could be sung instead of simply explained?

These songs are the result.

Some were inspired by passages from the Nemenhah Records.

Some were inspired by the Book of Mormon.

Some came from dreams.

Some came from family experiences.

Some came from lessons learned after more than seventy years of walking this earth.

But all of them point toward the same destination.

Jesus Christ.

As I listened to these songs develop, I noticed something interesting.

The songs themselves began to tell a story.

The journey begins with gratitude.

It moves toward Zion.

It teaches stewardship.

It encourages us to leave Babylon behind.

It reminds us to listen for the Voice.

It teaches us to become peacemakers.

It invites us to heal broken hearts.

And finally it leads us back to the Savior.

Perhaps that is the story of every disciple.

We begin by searching.

We spend years gathering knowledge.

We try to solve problems.

We try to fix people.

We try to understand mysteries.

Then eventually we discover something surprisingly simple.

The Lord was closer than we thought.

He was there before we arrived.

And in the end...

it was always about Him.

The songs below are organized in roughly the order they were written.

You may not connect with every song.

That is alright.

Music speaks differently to different people.

My hope is that somewhere among these songs you might find one that speaks to where you are right now.

Perhaps you need encouragement.

Perhaps you need healing.

Perhaps you need hope.

Perhaps you simply need a reminder that God has not forgotten you.

If even one song helps someone feel closer to Christ, then this little experiment was worth it.

So pull up a chair.

Sit on the porch for a while.

Listen to the music.

Read the words.

And see what the Spirit teaches you.

๐Ÿ“– A Final Thought

If there is one lesson these songs have taught me, it is this:

Zion is not built all at once.

It is built one heart at a time.

One act of kindness.

One act of stewardship.

One act of forgiveness.

One act of faith.

One soul helping another soul come unto Christ.

That is the journey.

That is the song.

And that is the invitation.

May the Lord bless you in your own journey.

And may we all learn to follow the Voice.
