π When Love Throws a Surprise (and You Can’t Even Swallow)
π When Love Throws a Surprise (and You Can’t Even Swallow)
When my wife and I first got married, she wanted to show me love the best way she knew how: throw me a surprise birthday party.
Now, to understand this story, you need to know one thing about me at the time—I was a world-class snorer. Lumberjack level. So my doctor scheduled a little surgery on my birthday: out came my tonsils, my uvula, and he even went remodeling through my nose.
By the time my sweet wife picked me up, my face was swollen up like a basketball. Imagine having eight wisdom teeth pulled from each side—plus your nose stuffed tight with cotton. Breathing was a chore. Talking was impossible.
πͺ And then she pulls in the driveway…
The door swings open…
Twenty people jump out and shout: “SURPRISE!!!”
Well, that was one of the biggest surprises of my life. I love her to death—but at that moment, let’s just say I didn’t exactly feel like the life of the party. I tried to smile, croaked out a word or two, and finally said, “You know what, folks? I’m going to bed.”
π And that’s how my dear wife’s love language collided head-on with my recovery room.
π² Love Isn’t Always Comfortable
That day taught me something. Love doesn’t always come wrapped in the way we’d prefer. Sometimes it comes with a swollen face and twenty guests. Sometimes it comes as a quiet service when you wish for words.
And with the Savior—it’s the same.
We might want fireworks or a booming voice from heaven.
Instead, we get a whisper. A bit of peace. The strength to make it through one more night.
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.” (John 14:15)
That’s Him saying “I love you”—even when no words are spoken.
π€ The Rest of the Snoring Story
Now, you’d think all that cutting and sewing would have solved my snoring. But a few months later… let’s just say I was still shaking the rafters.
So what did we do? We went down to the store, bought a giant box of earplugs—twenty pairs—and handed them over to my wife. And you know what? From that day forward, I never snored again. At least not in her world.
Sometimes the simplest solution is the sweetest: she slept, I snored, and love kept humming along.
π± Learning to Receive the Love
I look back and laugh now. That party (though ill-timed!) was overflowing with her love for me. I just couldn’t receive it in the condition I was in.
Maybe you’ve been there with God.
You pray for a miracle… and instead, He gives you patience.
You ask for the burden to be lifted… and instead, He gives you strength to carry it.
It might not look like love in the moment—but it’s still love.
As the Nemenhah say:
“If you cannot hear His words, walk in the goodness He has given you, and you will find Him again.”
π Don’t miss the love just because it doesn’t look the way you pictured it.
Even when the words aren’t spoken, His love is still there—sometimes swelling up larger than life… and sometimes sealed up tight in a pair of foam earplugs.
