The Vanity and Unbelief of the Church (D&C 84:55)

📝 Their Message (Summary)
Scripture shows us that Zion has never come slowly, by generations of gradual effort. Enoch, Melchizedek, and even Christ Himself in Bountiful—all established Zion because the people received the fulness, repented, and the Lord came to dwell with them.

But even those who personally saw Christ, touched Him, were healed by Him, and had translated beings living among them—still fell into apostasy within four generations (3 Nephi 28).

If they fell, how much more cautious must we be? Four generations after Joseph Smith’s death, with no personal visitation of Christ and no translated beings among us, can we really say “all is well in Zion”?

Joseph himself lamented that the Nauvoo Temple was unfinished before his death, knowing the “seals” he held would soon depart. Since then, we have not moved closer, but further away. D&C 84 warns us plainly: the whole Church is under condemnation for vanity and unbelief. Until we repent and remember the Book of Mormon, Christ cannot come to us. Because Christ is Zion.

🔥 My Reflection
This post humbles me. I realize how easy it is to assume that Zion is “progressing slowly,” that we just need more time. But the scriptures never describe Zion that way. Zion always comes suddenly—when a people are purified, when Christ Himself is present.

The piercing question lingers: Am I greater than those at Bountiful? If they fell even after seeing Christ, how can I imagine I am safe from unbelief without Him?

I feel the sting of D&C 84:55—that vanity and unbelief darken our minds. Am I treating lightly the covenant in the Book of Mormon? Am I substituting programs for presence?

This is not about nostalgia for Nauvoo or criticism of leadership—it’s about me. Do I hunger for Christ Himself, or just for what feels safe and familiar?

🕊️ The Invitation
Read D&C 84:54–57 slowly. Ask: is this condemnation lifted from me? Or am I still under it?

Then pray:

“Jesus, forgive my vanity. Forgive my unbelief. Restore me to You. Dwell with me, Lord, and make me Zion.”

Because Zion isn’t a city we build.
Zion is Jesus dwelling in His people.
