π️ When Truth Looks Gray — But Isn’t
(D&C 42, 123, and Seeing Through the Illusion)
π¨ A Lesson from Anthony Sweat — and the Lord Himself
A recent presentation by Anthony Sweat, BYU church history professor and artist, sparked some deep reflection. Sweat reminded his audience that the original Doctrine and Covenants wasn’t just “covenants.” The first half — the “Doctrine”— was actually Joseph Smith’s Lectures on Faith, quietly removed in 1921.
That little edit says a lot.
Scripture evolves when men handle it. The Lord’s word doesn’t change, but the books about His word sometimes do.
Sweat suggested the title might more accurately be the Book of Commandments or Book of Covenants.
And he made an important point:
“The Lord doesn’t draw hard lines between revelation, commandment, covenant, or law. What matters is obedience.”
That struck home. Because heaven speaks in many voices — revelation, whisper, impression, or even a piercing question — yet they all echo one thing: “Come, follow Me.”
π The Law Section That Still Cuts Deep
Sweat then focused on Doctrine and Covenants 42, often called “the Law.”
He found 17 commandments within it — a treasure chest of divine instruction.
But there’s one verse we can’t skim over:
“Thou shalt love thy wife with all thy heart, and shalt cleave unto her and none else.” — D&C 42:22
That line alone could melt an empire of excuses.
It stands as God’s own rebuke of polygamy — a law of love and loyalty that Joseph himself lived by, despite what later men claimed.
To love “her and none else” is not just marital advice; it’s covenant language. The Savior calls His bride — His Church — to the same single-hearted devotion.
π¦π« The Illusion That Tricks the Eye
Sweat ended with an unforgettable image: two gray squares on a checkerboard.
One looks lighter, the other darker… until you cover the shadow and see they’re exactly the same.
That illusion mirrors our spiritual lives.
We think we see clearly — but traditions, false narratives, and pride can cast shadows over truth.
When we finally move the obstacle… we see with new eyes.
Just as Paul wrote, “Now we see through a glass, darkly.”
And as the Nemenhah Records say:
“The eyes of the heart do not open until the shadows of men’s teachings are removed.” ✔
π¦ Bringing Hidden Things to Light
The speaker connected this lesson to D&C 123, written by Joseph Smith in Liberty Jail:
“It is an imperative duty… that we should waste and wear out our lives in bringing to light all the hidden things of darkness.”
Even from prison, Joseph’s soul burned for truth.
That same call rings now — to bring forward all that’s been buried by misunderstanding or design.
Whether it’s Joseph’s true monogamy, the removal of the Lectures on Faith, or the distortion of divine simplicity, the Lord is uncovering His truth piece by piece.
And the light is spreading — π over 50,000 souls have already seen one sister’s documentary shining this truth abroad.
π️ What the Spirit Whispered
This whole story reminds us:
Scripture changes when men tamper, but truth endures.
Revelation wears many names — law, commandment, covenant, whisper — but one voice.
Love, not lust, is the law of heaven.
Perception without the Spirit deceives the mind.
And courage in uncovering truth is a sacred stewardship.
The Lord is still peeling away the gray squares of illusion — until His people see light again as light, and darkness as darkness.
As the Nemenhah say:
“The Peacemaker shall cleanse the eyes of the people, and they shall discern truth without fear.” ✔
