πͺΆ SAME NAME… DIFFERENT GATHERING
What a “Solemn Assembly” Used to Be — and What It Is Now
π I was listening the other day…
And I heard the phrase again:
π “Solemn Assembly”
And something in me paused.
Not in anger.
Not in rebellion.
Just… quiet curiosity.
Because I’ve read that phrase before.
π WHERE DOES THIS COME FROM?
A solemn assembly isn’t new.
It didn’t start in Salt Lake.
It didn’t start in 1830.
It goes all the way back to scripture.
π BIBLE — WHAT IT WAS
π Joel 2
π 2 Chronicles 7
A solemn assembly meant one thing:
π Come before God… broken, humble, and ready
- Fasting
- Weeping
- Repenting
- Crying out to God
Not listening.
Not observing.
π Crying out.
And what happened?
- Fire came down from heaven
- The presence of God filled the temple
π BOOK OF MORMON — WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE
π Mosiah 2–5
π 3 Nephi 11
When people gathered…
π It wasn’t about leadership.
It was about:
- Falling to the earth
- Crying out for mercy
- Receiving a mighty change of heart
And in one case…
π Christ Himself showed up
No vote.
No formality.
π Just people… and God.
π️ JOSEPH SMITH’S TIME — WHAT HAPPENED
π Kirtland Temple Dedication
π Doctrine and Covenants 110
They called it a solemn assembly.
And here’s what they did:
- Prepared for months
- Repented deeply
- Fasted
- Sought God
And when they gathered?
- People saw angels
- They spoke in tongues
- They had visions
And then…
π Jesus Christ appeared
πΏ NEMENHAH RECORDS — WHAT THEY TEACH
From the Nemenhah…
You see the same pattern.
π Gatherings were never about control.
They were about:
- Purification
- Seeking the Peacemaker
- Receiving the Haymehnay (Holy Spirit)
- Teaching people to hear Him themselves
Not:
π “Follow us”
But:
π “Go to Him”
Even their instructions say:
- Teach the children to seek God directly
- Don’t hide sacred things
- Don’t turn forms into rigid control
πΊ TODAY — WHAT IT IS NOW
Today…
A solemn assembly looks like this:
- Millions watching
- A structured meeting
- A sustaining vote
π Raise your hand
π Sustain leadership
Sit. Listen.
That’s it.
⚖️ LET’S JUST SAY IT PLAIN
Here’s the shift:
π Then:
- People gathered to meet God
- Repentance was central
- Manifestations followed
π Now:
- People gather to sustain leadership
- Instruction is central
- Manifestations are not expected
π§ THIS ISN’T AN ATTACK
This is just observation.
The name stayed the same.
π The purpose shifted.
πͺΆ THE QUIET QUESTION
If someone from:
- Ancient Israel
- King Benjamin’s people
- Kirtland in 1836
…walked into a modern solemn assembly…
π Would they recognize it?
π MY HEART ON THIS
I’m not here to tear anything down.
There are good people everywhere.
People who love the Savior.
People trying their best.
But I’ve learned something…
π God doesn’t wait for an event.
π Christ doesn’t only speak from a pulpit.
π The Holy Ghost doesn’t require a schedule.
πͺΆ THE SIMPLE INVITATION
If you prepare for conference…
That’s good.
But don’t stop there.
π Prepare to meet Him… anytime.
π Learn His voice… for yourself.
π Follow Him… not just a moment.
π FINAL LINE
π Same name…
π But the real solemn assembly has always been…
π between you and God.

π WHAT A “SOLEMN ASSEMBLY” LOOKS LIKE — IN RECORD
For those who want to look directly at the pattern, here are the actual scriptural examples:
π Ancient Israel — A Call to Repentance
- Bible — Joel 2:15–17
- Sanctify a fast
- Call a solemn assembly
- Gather the people
- Let them weep and cry unto the Lord
π Focus: Repentance and pleading with God
π₯ Temple Dedication — God Responds
- Bible — 2 Chronicles 7:1–3
- Fire comes down from heaven
- Glory fills the house
- People fall to the ground and worship
π Result: God manifests His presence
π King Benjamin’s Gathering
- Book of Mormon — Mosiah 4:1–3
- People fall to the earth
- Cry out for mercy
- Receive remission of sins
- Filled with joy
π Result: A mighty change of heart
π️ Christ Among the People
- Book of Mormon — 3 Nephi 11:12–17
- People fall down before Him
- One by one experience Him
- Direct encounter with Christ
π Result: Personal witness, not mediated
π️ Kirtland (Joseph Smith’s Day)
- Doctrine and Covenants — D&C 110
- Visions
- Angels
- The Lord appears
π Result: Heaven responds to preparation
⚖️ A SIMPLE SIDE-BY-SIDE
| Scriptural Pattern | Modern Pattern (Observed) |
|---|---|
| Gather to seek God | Gather to sustain leaders |
| Fasting & repentance | Structured meeting |
| Crying out to God | Listening to speakers |
| Falling to the earth | Sitting in seats |
| Direct manifestations | No expectation of manifestation |
| Personal encounter | Collective participation |
π WHAT HAS NEVER CHANGED
Across every true example:
- People prepared deeply
- People humbled themselves
- People cried out directly to God
- God responded
Not because of the event…
But because of the condition of the people
π± A QUIET CLARIFICATION
A solemn assembly was never meant to be:
A broadcast
A vote
A scheduled moment
It was always meant to be:
π A meeting between you and God
π️ FINAL THOUGHT
Maybe the question isn’t:
“Did the format change?”
Maybe the question is:
π Are we still expecting God to show up…
or have we quietly stopped looking for Him?
