๐Ÿชถ LETTER ONE

Learn to Hear Jesus for Yourself

Kids,

If I could leave you one thing — just one — this would be it:

Learn to hear Jesus for yourself.

Not through me.
Not through a church.
Not through a leader.
Not through excitement.

For yourself.

I learned this later than I wish I had.

For many years I thought closeness to God came from being in the right system, saying the right things, defending the right ideas. And there is good in many of those places. I won’t deny that.

But the strongest moments of my life didn’t happen in a crowd.

They happened when I was quiet.

When I stopped trying to win arguments — even in my own head.

When I stopped trying to prove something.

When I stopped trying to fix everything.

And I simply yielded.

That’s when He became near.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

Near.

Back in 1971, I had an experience I will never forget.

It felt like light surrounded me.
Love filled me.
Peace settled deep.

For years I thought the miracle was the light.

But as I’ve grown older, I see it differently.

The miracle wasn’t the light.

The miracle was what happened right before it.

Surrender.

I wasn’t bargaining.
I wasn’t performing.
I wasn’t earning anything.

I just yielded.

And when I yielded…

fear loosened.

Control softened.

Striving quieted.

And light came.

Here’s what I’ve learned since then:

You don’t force revelation.

You prepare for it.

You don’t demand closeness.

You become willing.

“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10

Stillness is not weakness.

It’s trust.

I also learned something important about feelings.

You can feel warmth in many places.

You can feel inspired by sincere people.

You can feel uplifted in institutions, in music, in meetings.

But warmth alone is not the measuring rod.

The measuring rod is this:

Does this draw me closer to Jesus?

Does it make me more humble?

More kind?

More willing to repent? (Which means turn to HIM.)

More willing to forgive?

If something pulls you away from Him — even if it feels powerful — it isn’t from Him.

That question will save you a lot of confusion.

There will be seasons when everything feels loud.

Politics loud.

Religion loud.

Opinions loud.

Even your own thoughts loud.

In those seasons, don’t panic.

Return to quiet.

Ask Him.

Wait.

Listen.

“Draw near unto me and I will draw near unto you.” — James 4:8

That promise is personal.

It doesn’t require a building.

It doesn’t require permission.

It requires a willing heart.

I don’t need you to agree with everything I’ve ever said.

I don’t need you to see things exactly the way I do.

I just want you anchored to Him.

If you can hear His voice in your own life…

you will be steadier than I ever was.

You won’t need borrowed light.

You won’t need borrowed courage.

You won’t need borrowed conviction.

You’ll have your own.

And that is safer than any system.

If you ever feel confused…

Don’t look for me.

Look for His voice.

He’s better at this than I ever was.

Love,

grandpa
