πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ America at 250 — What Have We Done With Our Freedom?

A few Sundays ago, I had the opportunity to give the closing prayer at church.

One of the speakers had recently returned from serving as a mission president in Virginia.

As part of his remarks, he spoke about the Constitution and some of the men who helped shape the early United States.

Being a good Virginian by adoption, he spoke highly of Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and Alexander Hamilton.

After the meeting, I walked up and gave him a little friendly grief.

I said:

"You know, I just got back from Boston and New Hampshire. That talk might not go over quite the same up there."

I reminded him that before there was a Constitution, there was Boston.

There was the Tea Party.

There was Lexington.

There was Concord.

And there was John Adams.

I told him that the folks in Massachusetts might have a few thoughts about who deserves some credit.

Without missing a beat, he smiled and said:

"Well, we're thinking about adopting John Adams into Virginia."

I laughed.

That was a pretty good answer.

And a pretty good politician's answer too.

πŸ•Š️ Freedom Is a Great Blessing

As I thought about that conversation later, I found myself feeling grateful.

America is not perfect.

It never has been.

But for nearly 250 years, people have enjoyed freedoms here that much of the world has never known.

The freedom to worship.

The freedom to speak.

The freedom to gather.

The freedom to search for truth according to conscience.

Those are precious gifts.

Many sacrifices were made so those freedoms could exist.

🌿 But There Is a Greater Freedom

As important as political freedom is, I believe there is something even greater.

Governments can protect freedom.

Laws can protect freedom.

Constitutions can protect freedom.

But none of those things can heal a broken heart.

None of them can remove fear.

None of them can forgive sin.

Only Christ can do that.

The Savior said:

"If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed."

I have come to believe that the greatest freedom is not found in governments.

The greatest freedom is found in Him.

🌿 What Have We Done With Our Freedom?

As America approaches its 250th birthday, I find myself asking a simple question.

What have we done with the freedom we have been given?

Have we used it to become more kind?

More honest?

More charitable?

More Christlike?

Have we used it to help the poor?

Strengthen families?

Care for our neighbors?

Or have we sometimes spent our freedom chasing things that do not last?

Babylon has always promised happiness.

Christ offers peace.

Babylon promises comfort.

Christ offers transformation.

Babylon rises and falls.

Christ remains.

🌿 The Freedom Worth Keeping

I am grateful for the Constitution.

I am grateful for religious liberty.

I am grateful for those who sacrificed to preserve freedom.

But most of all, I am grateful for the freedom to seek Jesus Christ.

Because nations rise and fall.

Economies rise and fall.

Kingdoms rise and fall.

But Christ remains the same.

And perhaps the greatest use of freedom is simply this:

To freely choose Him.
