🌿 Opening Thought
"Every great journey begins long before the first step is taken. It begins when someone recognizes that the world around them is changing."
Most members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints know the story of Lehi.
He looked around his society and saw that his people were moving farther from God. While many dismissed the warnings, Lehi listened to the voice of the Lord. He gathered his family, preserved the sacred records, and began a journey that would shape generations.
The Nemenhah Sacred Records begin with a remarkably similar kind of story.
Not the same story.
But a story that serves a similar role within these records.
His name is Hahgohtl.
If Lehi is the great founding father of the Book of Mormon, then Hahgohtl becomes the great founding father of the Nemenhah people.
🌿 The Story
Hahgohtl introduces himself as an aging man who desires to preserve a record for future generations. He explains his ancestry, his relationship to Mohrhohnahyah, and the final years of the Nephite nation.
What impressed me most, however, was not his genealogy.
It was his ability to recognize the signs of spiritual decline.
He watched prosperity begin changing the hearts of the people.
Some became rich because of war.
Pride increased.
The unity that had once strengthened the nation slowly weakened.
Long before destruction arrived, Hahgohtl recognized that something far more important was already being lost.
Great civilizations rarely collapse in a single day.
They first forget who they are.
🌿 What Does This Teach Us?
Many people think courage always means staying and fighting.
Sometimes it does.
But sometimes courage means preserving what is sacred before it is lost.
Rather than waiting for complete collapse, Hahgohtl built ships.
Families gathered.
Copies of the sacred records were prepared.
A new journey toward the land northward began.
This migration was not merely an escape.
It was an act of faith.
🌿 Walking the Path
One detail especially stands out.
Before the people departed, copies of the sacred writings were carried with them so they would not fall into unbelief.
Homes may change.
Cities may change.
Cultures may change.
But if a people preserve God's word among their families, they carry with them the foundation of their covenant.
Perhaps that is the first great lesson Hahgohtl leaves us.
🌿 Talking Feather's Porch
I remember standing in Hawaii at my granddaughter's wedding.
Families came from every direction.
Grandparents.
Parents.
Children.
Everyone seemed to know they belonged to one another.
As I watched them laugh, work together, and honor one another, I found myself thinking about Hahgohtl.
I'm not saying the people of Hawaii descended from Hahgohtl. The records don't make that claim, and I don't want to claim more than they do.
But that experience helped me imagine what a covenant people living in unity might have looked like.
Sometimes a place reminds us of a principle.
That day reminded me that Zion has always begun with families learning to love one another.
