The Story of Corianton and Isabel
"The world remembered who she'd been. The Savior knew who she'd become."
When most people hear the names Corianton and Isabel, they usually remember only one chapter of their story.
Corianton is remembered for his fall.
Isabel is remembered by the reputation attached to her name.
Yet I have often wondered...
What happened after?
The Book of Mormon tells us that Corianton repented and returned to the ministry after Alma's loving counsel. It says very little about Isabel herself. That silence invites us to reflect on one of the Savior's greatest teachings:
No one is forever defined by their worst day.
This song imagines what redemption might have looked like if mercy had the final word instead of rumor.
In the Nemenhah tradition that has deeply influenced many of my writings, the story continues beyond what is recorded in the Book of Mormon. Those records describe Corianton and Isabel building a faithful home together, raising a righteous family, and becoming part of a remarkable spiritual legacy.
According to that tradition, their grandson was Samuel the Lamanite—the courageous prophet who stood upon the city wall and boldly called the Nephites to repentance when few would listen. The Nemenhah records also preserve additional teachings and accounts connected with Samuel and his family, portraying him as one of the great prophetic voices whose ministry extended far beyond the brief account recorded in the Book of Mormon.
Whether or not readers are familiar with those records, the message of this song remains the same.
The Savior sees possibilities where others see failures.
He sees daughters and sons of God where the world sees labels.
He sees tomorrow while we are still looking at yesterday.
The baskets in this song become a symbol of that quiet transformation.
One act of kindness.
One step of repentance.
One day of faithfulness.
One life patiently woven back together by the Master Weaver.
Perhaps that is why I love the final lines:
"The world remembered who she'd been.
The Savior knew who she'd become."
That is not only Isabel's story.
It is Corianton's story.
It is Samuel's story.
And, in many ways...
It is our story.
Because the gospel of Jesus Christ has always been about restoration.
Not simply restoring truth.
But restoring people.

Hello, my friends.
It's me again...
Just the old man from the sticks.
I've been thinking about one of the most misunderstood love stories I've ever read.
Most of us grew up hearing only one side of it.
A young missionary...
A woman with a difficult past...
A father who believed the worst...
And a story that seemed to end in disappointment.
But what if there was more to it?
What if the greatest miracle wasn't someone's fall...
but someone's redemption?
🧺 The Basket Weaver
The Nemenhah record tells of a woman named Itsahbehl.
She had made mistakes.
She carried scars.
But she had also done something many people never noticed...
She repented.
She opened her home.
She welcomed those who taught about the Peacemaker.
She fed them.
She served them.
And she quietly sat weaving baskets with her own hands.
Yet the people around her remembered only who she had been.
They wouldn't buy her baskets.
They wouldn't worship with her.
They wouldn't let her leave her past behind.
Isn't it amazing how easy it is to believe repentance—for ourselves...
yet struggle to believe it for someone else?
🦬 A Man Who Saw More
Kohrayahntohn didn't see a scandal.
He saw a daughter of God.
He saw courage.
He saw kindness.
He saw someone trying to begin again.
Sometimes loving another person means standing beside them when everyone else walks away.
That kind of love always costs something.
But sometimes...
it's exactly where the Lord is standing.
🌾 Mercy Builds Tomorrow
One of my favorite thoughts from this story is that mercy never ends with one person.
When one heart is healed...
a family can be healed.
When a family is healed...
generations are blessed.
We often think redemption is only about yesterday.
Heaven is usually thinking about tomorrow.
❤️ What About Us?
Maybe you've made mistakes.
Maybe someone still reminds you of them.
Maybe you've wondered whether God has really forgiven you.
Or perhaps you've met someone who is trying to come back...
and you've wondered whether to trust them.
The Savior has an amazing way of seeing what people can become instead of only what they have been.
What if we learned to see one another that way?
How many lonely people would find a home?
How many broken hearts would begin to heal?
How many "basket weavers" would finally discover that they belong?
🌿 My Porch Thought
The older I get, the less interested I am in labels.
I'd rather know someone's heart.
I'd rather watch what the grace of Christ is doing in their life.
I've discovered that heaven writes much longer stories than we do.
We often stop at the chapter called Failure.
God keeps writing until He reaches the chapter called Redemption.
Maybe that's why I love this story so much.
It reminds me that Christ never throws away a soul willing to come home.
Neither should we.
