When most people hear the word Zion, they picture a city.
Some imagine walls.
Others think of temples.
Still others dream of a future gathering place somewhere upon the earth.
Those things may have their place.
But long before Zion becomes a city...
It must become a people.
That is the blueprint.
The Pattern Never Changes
Throughout history, the Lord has always begun the same way.
He changes hearts before He changes societies.
He teaches individuals before He builds nations.
He forms families before He establishes communities.
Zion has never been built from the outside in.
It has always been built from the inside out.
That is why the Savior spent so much time changing hearts instead of organizing governments.
The Four Pillars
Every enduring house requires a solid foundation.
The ancient pattern describes four great pillars:
Knowledge
Learning truth and seeking wisdom through the Light of Christ and the Holy Ghost.
Virtue
Choosing purity, honesty, humility, courage, and integrity in everyday life.
Sacrifice
Willingly placing God's will above our own and offering our lives in loving service.
Consecration
Recognizing that everything we possess ultimately belongs to God and is to be used to bless His children.
These are not simply doctrines.
They become the character of a Zion people.
Listening Before Speaking
One of the beautiful images preserved in ancient traditions is the Talking Feather.
Only one person speaks.
Everyone else listens.
Not waiting to respond.
Listening to understand.
Perhaps Zion grows whenever people value understanding more than winning an argument.
The Holy Ghost often speaks most clearly to hearts that have become quiet enough to hear.
No Poor Among Them
The scriptures describe Zion with one unforgettable phrase:
"There were no poor among them."
That statement reaches far beyond money.
A Zion people refuses to leave anyone behind.
The lonely are welcomed.
The hungry are fed.
The forgotten are remembered.
The weak are strengthened.
The grieving are comforted.
Consecration is not merely giving away possessions.
It is giving our hearts to God and our hands to one another.
The Medicine Wheel
The Medicine Wheel reminds us that life moves in sacred seasons.
Morning and evening.
Spring and winter.
Youth and age.
Learning and teaching.
Every season has something to offer.
Every person has gifts to contribute.
No one stands outside the circle.
That is part of the blueprint.
Refuge Before Recognition
The scriptures speak of a people who become a refuge.
Not because they seek attention...
But because they reflect Jesus Christ.
A Zion community becomes a place where the weary find rest.
Where forgiveness is practiced.
Where children are cherished.
Where mothers and fathers lead with humility.
Where every voice matters.
Where the Holy Ghost is welcome.
Such places are not created by programs.
They are created by converted hearts.
A Personal Reflection
The more I study Zion, the more I realize that the Lord has never asked us to begin by building cities.
He asks us to become the kind of people who could live in one.
Every act of kindness...
Every quiet sacrifice...
Every forgiven offense...
Every meal shared...
Every child taught...
Every humble prayer...
These are the stones from which Zion is built.
The blueprint has never been hidden.
It has always pointed to Jesus Christ, the true Master Builder.
As we learn to walk with Him, one soul, one family, and one act of grace at a time, Zion begins to appear—not only around us, but within us.
