๐ How Great Thou Art
Every Wednesday afternoon I like to share a piece of music that has touched my heart.
This week is one of those songs that needs no introduction.
๐ถ Carrie Underwood — How Great Thou Art

My dear wife and I had the opportunity to visit Nashville, Tennessee.
One of the highlights was seeing the famous Ryman Auditorium, often called the Mother Church of Country Music.
As I listened to this performance, memories came flooding back.
This was also my father's favorite song.
And now, as I get older, I think I understand why.
๐ฉ️ Born From a Storm
Many people don't realize that this hymn began with a storm.
In 1885, a Swedish preacher named Carl Boberg was walking home after church when a violent thunderstorm suddenly appeared.
Lightning flashed.
Thunder rolled.
The winds howled.
Then, just as quickly as it came, the storm passed.
The sky cleared.
The birds began singing again.
As he stood there looking over God's creation, he felt overwhelmed by the majesty of the Creator.
That experience inspired the poem that eventually became the hymn we know today as How Great Thou Art.
๐ฟ Creation Testifies
One reason this hymn has always touched me is because it reminds me of something I have found in the scriptures, the Book of Mormon, and the Nemenhah Records.
Creation bears witness of God.
The mountains.
The rivers.
The stars.
The desert sunrise.
The cool breeze at the end of a hot day.
All of it points back to the Creator.
The older I get, the less I need complicated answers.
Sometimes a sunrise says more than a thousand sermons.
✝️ Then Sings My Soul
The most powerful part of the hymn is not the storm.
It is not even the beauty of creation.
It is Christ.
When I think of the Savior.
When I think of His mercy.
When I think of how patient He has been with me throughout my life.
Then sings my soul.
"My Savior God, to Thee,
How great Thou art."
That is the heart of the song.
❤️ My Father's Song
Whenever I hear this hymn, I think of my father.
Certain songs become part of a family's story.
This was one of ours.
Years have passed.
Generations come and go.
But some truths never change.
God is still God.
Christ is still the Savior.
The Holy Ghost still speaks.
And the heavens still declare His glory.
๐ต Take Five Minutes
Turn off the noise.
Listen to this performance.
Watch the faces in the audience.
Listen to the words.
Then step outside.
Look at the sky.
Offer a prayer.
And let your soul answer the question for itself:
"How Great Thou Art."
