🚶 The Temple Begins at Home
The Four Pillars That Lead Us into the Presence of the Peacemaker

❓A Discovery That Changed My Thinking
For years I thought of the temple primarily as a place to go.
Then I discovered something beautiful in the Nemenhah Sacred Records.
The Holy House is not presented as the destination.
It is presented as the place that prepares us to walk with the Peacemaker.
That simple thought changed everything for me.
📖 The Bible
David asked,
"Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord?... He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart."
(Psalm 24:3–4)
Hebrews teaches that Jesus Christ has opened "a new and living way" into the presence of God.
(Hebrews 10:19–22)
The destination has always been the same:
To know Him.
📖 The Book of Mormon
Nephi taught us to press forward with steadfastness in Christ.
King Benjamin taught us to become new creatures.
Moroni's final invitation was:
"Come unto Christ, and be perfected in him."
(Moroni 10:32)
The journey has always been about becoming more like Christ.
📖 Joseph Smith
Joseph Smith restored temple ordinances because he believed they prepared people to receive greater light from heaven.
The purpose was not merely to perform sacred ceremonies.
It was to prepare a Zion people who could eventually stand in the presence of God.
🪶 The Nemenhah Sacred Records
This is where the Nemenhah gave me one of the greatest discoveries.
The Record teaches that the Tuhhuhlnuhmtsipi (Holy House) exists first to teach the Four Great Pillars, or Temple Covenants:
- Knowledge (the Gospel)
- Sacrifice and Obedience
- Virtue
- Consecration
These are called the foundation of temple worship.
Then comes something remarkable.
Before anyone participates in the ordinances of the Holy House, these principles are first taught in the home. The Record says a man or woman must demonstrate an understanding of the ordinance before participating, and additional instruction is then given in the Holy House.
The Record then lists the ordinances:
- Washing and Anointing
- Baptism
- The Endowment of Power
- Eternal Marriage
- Calling and Election
Then it makes this profound statement:
"It is the ordinances of the Tuhhuhl Nuhmehn which do set the Nemenhah upon the path of the Peacemaker."
Notice what it does not say.
It does not say the ordinances are the destination.
They set us upon the path.
Then, in The Book of Mahnti, Chapter Eight, Mahnti explains the meaning of the Endowment of Power.
He says its greatest importance is not merely passing through the veil, but what enters the heart and soul before approaching the veil.
He asks:
- Are we learning to take counsel that is above the wisdom of the world?
- Are we learning to pass through mortality without taking upon ourselves the sins of this generation?
- Are we learning to remove the veil from our own hearts so we may receive instruction directly from the Peacemaker?
Then he answers:
"That is the purpose of these holy things."
Finally he declares:
"Do we not also place our feet upon that same path?"
To me, that is one of the most beautiful temple teachings in the entire Record.

This discovery didn't lessen my appreciation for the temple.
It deepened it.
The Four Pillars are not things we leave inside a sacred building.
They become the pattern of our lives.
Knowledge.
Sacrifice.
Virtue.
Consecration.
The Holy House teaches them.
The home practices them.
Life proves them.
Perhaps the greatest endowment is not something we receive in a single day.
Perhaps it is the gradual transformation of our hearts until we truly walk with the Peacemaker.
🤔 Questions to Ponder
- Why does the Nemenhah teach the Four Pillars before anyone enters the Holy House?
- Why do the ordinances place us upon the path instead of becoming the destination?
- What would happen if every home became the first school of temple preparation?
- Am I simply attending holy places, or am I becoming a holier disciple?
🌿 Walking Together
The Holy House is sacred.
The ordinances are sacred.
But they point beyond themselves.
They invite us to walk with the Peacemaker every day.
The journey begins at home.
It continues throughout life.
And its destination is not merely a temple.
Its destination is the presence of Jesus Christ.
