The Covenant Is Meant to Be Lived

❓ The Question
When I first entered the temple, I felt I had stepped onto holy ground.
I made sacred covenants.
I felt closer to God.
But over the years, another question began to grow in my heart.
Was the endowment meant to end in the temple?
Or...
Was it meant to begin there?
That question eventually led me to one of the most beautiful teachings in the Nemenhah Sacred Records.
📜 The Bible
From the beginning, God's desire has not simply been to dwell in sacred buildings.
His desire has been to dwell within His people.
Paul taught:
"Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?"
1 Corinthians 3:16
The temple points us toward becoming a holy people.
📘 The Book of Mormon
The Book of Mormon teaches the same pattern.
We come unto Christ.
We are baptized.
We receive the Holy Ghost.
We endure to the end.
The covenant is not completed in a single day.
It becomes a way of life.
👤 Joseph Smith's Teachings
Joseph Smith taught that the purpose of the endowment was to prepare God's children to return to the presence of God.
It was never intended to be merely a ceremony.
It was preparation for becoming a Zion people.
🪶 The Nemenhah Sacred Records
This is where I found one of the clearest patterns in the entire Record.
The Nemenhah describe a progressive covenant journey built upon Four Pillars.
Not simply principles to understand...
But covenants to live.
📖 Second Book of Ohuhgohuh — Chapter 1
A husband and wife are taught the Pillars of Knowledge and Sacrifice and then enter into a covenant to live those principles all the days of their lives.
Later they are taught the Pillar of Virtue and covenant to remain faithful to it throughout life.
Finally they receive instruction in the Pillar of Consecration. Their robes are joined together, they take upon themselves the name of Sahnhehmpeht, enter the most holy place, bless one another, and are sanctified through the laying on of hands.
Notice the pattern.
The ordinances are never separated from daily discipleship.
Each covenant becomes something to live.
📖 Book of the Tuhhuhl Nuhmehn — Chapter 6
The Record then explains what Consecration looks like in everyday life.
After providing for one's own family, the disciple freely uses the Creator's blessings to:
- Feed the hungry.
- Clothe the naked.
- Lift up weary hands.
- Shoulder one another's burdens.
Consecration is not merely a promise.
It becomes a way of living.
💎 Great Discovery
This changed the way I think about the endowment.
The temple is not the finish line.
It is the beginning of a covenant walk.
Knowledge...
Sacrifice...
Virtue...
Consecration...
These are not simply lessons.
They are the path that prepares us to become more like Jesus Christ.

The Nemenhah did not lessen my appreciation for the temple.
They deepened it.
They reminded me that every covenant asks the same question:
How will I live this today?
That simple question transformed my daily walk with Christ.

- Is the temple the beginning of my covenant walk?
- How do Knowledge, Sacrifice, Virtue, and Consecration shape daily discipleship?
- Why does the Nemenhah record present these as lifelong covenants rather than isolated events?
- How can I better live the covenants I have already made?
- What is the Lord inviting me to become?
🕊️ Walking Together
God's purpose has always been the same.
Not merely that we visit His house.
But that we become His people.
Read the scriptures.
Read the Nemenhah passages.
Compare the witnesses.
Then ask the Lord to help you live your covenants each day.
