🕊️ The Gospel Hanging on My Son’s Refrigerator

I was visiting my son and his family recently back in New Hampshire.
And while everybody was moving around the kitchen…
kids laughing,
people talking,
life happening…
I noticed something taped quietly to the refrigerator.
It was a simple list of family values.
Not fancy.
Not religious marketing.
Just things like:
- Tell the truth.
- Pray morning and night.
- Help without being asked.
- Celebrate other people’s success.
- Say “I love you.”
- Be grateful.
- Finish strong.
- Stay humble.
- Speak kindly.
- Keep learning.
And honestly…
I stood there staring at it longer than probably anybody noticed.
Because it hit me deep.
🌾 It Felt Like the Gospel
The interesting thing is…
my son and his family no longer attend the LDS Church.
And yet standing there in that kitchen…
I thought:
“The Spirit of Christ feels very comfortable in this home.”
That may bother some people.
But maybe we need to think more deeply about what actually matters to Heaven.
Because sometimes we accidentally confuse:
- church culture,
- religious identity,
- and outward membership…
with the actual fruits of Christ.
But the Savior said:
“By their fruits ye shall know them.”
— Matthew 7:20
Not by labels.
By fruit.
📜 Moroni Explained This Perfectly
Moroni gave one of the simplest tests ever given in scripture:
“For behold, every thing which inviteth to do good, and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ.”
— Moroni 7:16
That refrigerator invited people to do good.
It invited:
- gratitude,
- humility,
- truthfulness,
- prayer,
- kindness,
- service,
- love.
That matters.
A lot.
🌱 Maybe We Have Overcomplicated the Gospel
Sometimes religion becomes so complicated that we miss the simple beauty of goodness itself.
We argue over:
- institutions,
- authority,
- history,
- tribes,
- politics,
- appearances,
- and who is “in” or “out.”
Meanwhile…
a family quietly tries to:
- pray together,
- speak kindly,
- tell the truth,
- clean up after themselves,
- help neighbors,
- and love one another.
And honestly?
That feels very close to the teachings of Jesus.
🕊️ Zion Starts Smaller Than We Think
The Book of Mormon says:
“And surely there could not be a happier people among all the people who had been created by the hand of God.”
— 4 Nephi 1:16
Why?
Because they loved each other.
There was no pride.
No class warfare.
No constant contention.
No need to prove superiority.
Just people trying to live in peace together.
Sometimes I think Zion begins long before cities.
Maybe it begins:
- in kitchens,
- around dinner tables,
- in bedtime prayers,
- in small acts of service,
- and in homes where people feel safe and loved.
❤️ You Don’t Have to Wear a Label to Love Like Christ
This may be one of the hardest lessons for religious people to accept.
Goodness is not owned by one institution.
Christ is constantly working with people everywhere.
There are deeply loving people:
- inside churches,
- outside churches,
- in all walks of life,
- in all kinds of families.
And when people genuinely try to become:
- humble,
- loving,
- truthful,
- prayerful,
- and kind…
the Spirit of Christ is near them.
Nephi taught:
“For the right way is to believe in Christ, and deny him not.”
— 2 Nephi 25:29
Sometimes we make it far more complicated than that.
🪶 From the Hick in the Sticks
I’m just an old guy standing in a kitchen looking at a refrigerator.
But standing there…
I thought:
“If more homes lived these simple values, the world would heal faster.”
Not perfect people.
Not performative religion.
Just people trying to:
- love deeply,
- speak kindly,
- pray sincerely,
- help quietly,
- and tell the truth.
That feels a lot like the Spirit of Christ to me.
