🌿 Opening Thought
"Faith does not stop at the first comfortable place. It continues until God says, 'This is the place.'"
The miracle of the Great Fish had saved their lives.
The people had eaten.
The sick were recovering.
The Lord had once again shown His mercy.
If there were ever a time to stop, this seemed to be it.
The river had become calmer.
The land was improving.
Many would have been grateful simply to survive.
But Hahgohtl was not searching for the first place that was comfortable.
He was searching for the place the Lord had prepared.
🌿 The Story
With renewed strength, the company loaded their boats and continued upstream.
The journey was still difficult, but something had changed.
Instead of endless barren canyon walls, the land slowly began to open before them.
Streams flowed into the great river.
Trees became more plentiful.
Wildlife increased.
The earth itself seemed to welcome them.
The record describes a land rich with food, useful plants, timber, and abundant resources. It was unlike anything they had seen since entering the great canyon. Hahgohtl recognized that this was more than good fortune. The Lord had been leading them all along.
Yet even then, he did not rush ahead carelessly.
He observed.
He prayed.
He watched.
Only after carefully considering the land did he establish a settlement for his people.
What had begun as a desperate journey for survival was becoming the beginning of a new homeland.
🌿 What Does This Teach Us?
One lesson stands above all the others.
Hahgohtl refused to let hardship force his decisions.
Neither did he allow comfort to make them.
He waited upon the Lord.
How often do we settle simply because life becomes a little easier?
How often do we stop growing because the immediate danger has passed?
The record teaches that God's purposes are often found one more step beyond where we would naturally quit.
Another beautiful principle emerges as the people entered this new land.
They immediately began discovering the gifts the Creator had already placed there.
Every valley held new opportunities.
Every stream brought new life.
The Lord had not merely preserved them.
He had prepared a future for them.
🌿 Walking the Path
There are seasons when life feels like rowing against the current.
Then there are moments when things finally become easier.
Those moments are wonderful—but they are not always the finish line.
Sometimes God gives us rest so we can continue the journey.
Sometimes He gives us peace so we can build.
The challenge is learning the difference.
Like Hahgohtl, we must keep asking:
"Lord, is this where You want me to stay?"
🌿 Talking Feather's Porch
As I thought about this lesson, I couldn't help but think about my own life.
There have been times when I wanted to stop simply because the struggle was over.
After my back surgery, just walking again felt like enough.
Then little by little, the Lord invited me to keep going.
A little farther.
A little stronger.
Eventually, I found myself back on the golf course.
Not because I had reached the end of the journey...
but because I had reached the next place the Lord wanted me to be.
Hahgohtl reminds me that the miracle isn't only surviving the canyon.
Sometimes the greater miracle is having the courage to keep following the river after the canyon is behind us.
