🪶 THE PRIESTHOOD WAS NEVER JUST AUTHORITY
It Was Always Meant To Be A Way of Life With Christ
There’s something in the Nemenhah teachings that hit me right between the eyes this week.
Not because it was complicated…
But because it was simple.
Beautifully simple.
And honestly… it feels more like the Savior than almost anything I’ve read in a long time.
🌿 “The ordinances do not save us…”
Listen to this from Chapter 14:
“Behold, the ordinances do not save us. It is by living the principles that such things teach us that conveys us into the presence of the Peacemaker.”
That’s a stunning statement.
Not anti-ordinance.
Not anti-temple.
Not anti-priesthood.
But putting everything back into its proper place.
The ordinances are not the destination.
They are the road signs.
The purpose is to actually become the kind of people who can walk with Christ.
🪶 Priesthood Was Never Supposed To Be Just Rank
One of the biggest things this chapter does is completely reframe “priesthood.”
Most of us grew up thinking priesthood meant:
- authority
- office
- position
- hierarchy
- keys
- status
But Moroni says something very different.
He says the true purpose of the Tuwekhtimsa — what we’d call priesthood — is:
“to prepare the hearts of all men and women to stand in the very presence of Pah Aylohway and of Tsi Aylohway and receive of them the fullness…”
That changes everything.
The purpose is not control.
The purpose is preparation to meet Him.
🌄 “It is by walking that road…”
Another line that absolutely grabbed me:
“Yea, the works and ordinances of the Tuwekhtimsa do place our feet upon a good road… but it shall be by walking that road that we do achieve such things.”
There it is.
Walking.
Not merely attending.
Not merely receiving.
Walking.
Living.
Learning.
Failing.
Trying again.
Consecrating what is good.
Putting our feet on the path with the Savior every single day.
That’s priesthood.
Not merely authority.
But partnership with Christ in daily life.
🌎 Consecrate Every Good Thing
This chapter keeps returning to one giant idea:
Our great work is to consecrate every good thing.
Not just church things.
Not just temple things.
Every good thing.
Family.
Work.
Land.
Food.
Teaching children.
Building community.
Caring for one another.
Learning stewardship.
Learning peace.
Learning how to hear Him.
That’s why the Nemenhah viewed priesthood as connected to ALL of life.
Not just Sunday meetings.
🔥 “Matter recognizes the voice of the Master”
This chapter also says something astonishing about miracles.
It teaches that when a servant truly walks with the Peacemaker:
“the elements obey.”
Why?
Because creation recognizes His voice.
Not magic.
Not a man possessing power.
But creation hearing the voice of the Creator through someone aligned with Him.
That sounds a whole lot more like Jesus calming the sea…
than modern religious bureaucracy.
🌿 The Savior Wants Us To Come To HIM
One of my favorite parts says:
“He employs no steward there… but prefers that we come unto him and not unto our forefathers.”
That’s huge.
No royal bloodline.
No aristocratic priesthood.
No spiritual elite class.
The invitation is direct:
Come unto Christ.
Seek His face.
Walk the road.
Learn His voice.
Become like Him.
🏕️ The Whole Community Matters
Another thing that deeply touched me…
In these teachings, priesthood wasn’t just for “important people.”
Everybody mattered.
Children mattered.
Teachers mattered.
Weavers mattered.
Fire tenders mattered.
Water pourers mattered.
Mothers mattered.
Grandfathers mattered.
The whole community participated.
That feels much closer to:
- 4 Nephi
- Acts
- Zion
- and honestly… the heart of Christ Himself.
☀️ We Were Meant To Be Connected Again
One section talked about modern people becoming disconnected from creation itself.
And honestly…
that hit home too.
We sit indoors.
Live in artificial worlds.
Forget the sunlight.
Forget the earth.
Forget the sacredness of creation.
But the chapter teaches:
we are connected to all things.
And priesthood — true priesthood — reconnects us to:
- God
- creation
- community
- stewardship
- and each other.
🪶 The Real Priesthood
Maybe this is the simplest way I can say it:
The real priesthood is not merely permission to act.
It is learning to live with Christ.
Learning to think like Him.
Learning to serve like Him.
Learning to love like Him.
Learning to consecrate good things with Him.
Learning to walk the road with Him.
And honestly…
that feels a whole lot closer to the gospel I read in the Book of Mormon than the idea that priesthood is mostly about rank and administration.
🌄 Final Thought
Moroni may have said it best:
“The ordinances do not save us. It is by living the principles that such things teach us…”
That’s the invitation.
Not merely to receive something.
But to become something.
To become people who:
- walk gently
- hear His voice
- love deeply
- serve quietly
- consecrate good things
- and finally…
stand in His presence.
That sounds like the Way to me.
