๐ŸŒฟ What Do the Nemenhah Records Really Teach?

A Porch Conversation About Christ, the Holy Ghost, and Building Zion

Every so often someone asks me a simple question.

"What is it about the Nemenhah Records that has captured your attention for so many years?"

It's a fair question.

After all, there are discussions about history.

Questions about geography.

Stories about Hagoth.

Accounts involving Moroni, Timothy, Samuel the Lamanite, and other familiar names.

There are fascinating traditions.

Interesting possibilities.

And plenty of mysteries.

But the older I get, the more I realize that none of those things are the real reason I keep returning to these records.

The reason is much simpler.

The Nemenhah Records keep pointing me back to Jesus Christ.

And that is something worth talking about.

๐Ÿ“– More Than a History Book

One of the easiest mistakes to make is assuming the Nemenhah Records are primarily about history.

I don't believe they are.

History is certainly part of the story.

The Book of Mormon itself leaves many questions unanswered.

For example, Hagoth appears briefly and then disappears.

๐Ÿ“– Alma 63:5–8

"And it came to pass that Hagoth... built him an exceedingly large ship..."

People sailed northward.

Some ships never returned.

Then Mormon simply moves on.

For years readers have wondered:

Where did those people go?

What became of them?

The Nemenhah traditions offer possible answers.

But interestingly, the records spend far more time teaching people how to live than explaining where they came from.

That got my attention.

๐Ÿ‘‚ The First Great Lesson: Hear His Voice

If I had to identify the single most important message found throughout the Nemenhah Records, this would be it:

Learn to hear the voice of Christ.

Not merely learn about Him.

Hear Him.

The Savior taught this same principle in scripture.

๐Ÿ“– John 10:27

"My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me."

๐Ÿ“– 2 Nephi 32:5

"The Holy Ghost... will show unto you all things what ye should do."

Again and again the Nemenhah teachings emphasize personal revelation.

The Lord desires a relationship with His children.

Not secondhand.

Not borrowed.

Personal.

That principle has become increasingly important to me over the years.

๐Ÿ”ฅ The Baptism of Fire

The second great lesson is one that has deeply affected my own life.

The baptism of fire.

The mighty change of heart.

The transforming power of the Holy Ghost.

๐Ÿ“– 3 Nephi 9:20

"Ye shall offer for a sacrifice unto me a broken heart and a contrite spirit."

๐Ÿ“– Mosiah 5:2

"We have no more disposition to do evil, but to do good continually."

The Nemenhah Records repeatedly point readers toward spiritual transformation.

Not merely being religious.

Not merely attending meetings.

Not merely belonging.

Being changed.

Many years ago, I experienced what I can only describe as a baptism of fire.

For a brief moment, I felt the love of God flowing through every fiber of my being.

Light.

Love.

Peace.

Joy.

Ever since that experience, I have measured spiritual things against that standard.

Do they bring me closer to Christ?

Do they increase love?

Do they increase charity?

Do they help me hear His voice?

That experience became a compass for my life.

❤️ Charity Is the Real Test

The older I get, the less impressed I am by arguments.

And the more impressed I am by charity.

The Nemenhah Records return to this theme over and over again.

Not status.

Not authority.

Not position.

Love.

๐Ÿ“– Moroni 7:47

"Charity is the pure love of Christ."

How do we treat people?

How do we respond when we are offended?

How do we care for those in need?

How do we forgive?

How do we serve?

Without charity, Zion cannot exist.

๐Ÿก Zion Begins Before Zion Arrives

One of the greatest lessons found throughout the records is that Zion is not simply a future event.

It begins now.

It begins in homes.

In families.

In communities.

In hearts.

๐Ÿ“– Moses 7:18

"And the Lord called his people Zion, because they were of one heart and one mind."

๐Ÿ“– 4 Nephi 1:3

"And they had all things common among them."

The Nemenhah teachings repeatedly describe caring for one another.

Helping one another.

Removing pride.

Lifting burdens.

Creating communities where people matter more than possessions.

That sounds very much like Zion to me.

๐Ÿ‘ฉ Mothers, Fathers, and Future Generations

One thing that stands out in the Nemenhah traditions is the importance of families.

Particularly the influence of mothers.

We see something similar in the Book of Mormon.

๐Ÿ“– Alma 56:47–48

"They had been taught by their mothers..."

The future of Zion is often shaped in homes long before it is shaped in public gatherings.

Strong families create strong communities.

Strong communities create Zion.

⭕ The Medicine Wheel

One teaching I have always appreciated is the Medicine Wheel.

Many people view spiritual growth as a ladder.

Climb.

Advance.

Reach the top.

The Medicine Wheel offers a different picture.

A circle.

A journey.

A lifetime of learning.

Faith.

Repentance.

Charity.

Service.

Again and again.

Each pass teaching us something new.

The older I get, the more that pattern feels true.

The Lord works patiently with us.

๐Ÿ“– 2 Nephi 28:30

"Line upon line, precept upon precept."

That sounds a lot like the Medicine Wheel to me.

๐ŸŒŽ Preparing a Zion People

When I step back and look at the big picture, I see one central purpose.

Preparing a people for Christ.

A people who hear His voice.

A people led by the Holy Ghost.

A people filled with charity.

A people who care for one another.

A people prepared to receive the Savior.

That is the message I see repeated again and again.

๐ŸŒฟ What I Know Now

Reasonable people may reach different conclusions about the Nemenhah Records.

I understand that.

Every person must seek their own witness.

But I can tell you what these records have done for me.

They have strengthened my faith in Christ.

They have deepened my appreciation for the Book of Mormon.

They have increased my desire to seek the Holy Ghost.

They have expanded my understanding of Zion.

Most importantly...

They have pointed me repeatedly back toward Jesus Christ.

And after all the books...

After all the studies...

After all the questions...

After all the years...

I still come back to the same conclusion.

✝️ Christ is the answer.

He always was.

He always will be.

And Zion will always be built one changed heart at a time.
