🪶 Moroni Raised a Standard, Not Just a Banner
After pondering sacred circles…
and Lehi’s tree at the center…
and King Benjamin’s people turned toward the temple…
my thoughts kept moving to Moroni.
And a strange thought came.
Maybe the Title of Liberty was not just a battle flag.
Maybe it was a call to return to Center.
Stay with me.
When Moroni rent his coat and raised that standard…
he didn’t raise a slogan.
He raised a covenant.
“In memory of our God…”
That comes first.
God first.
Center first.
Then religion.
Then freedom.
Then peace.
Then wives and children.
(Interesting order, isn’t it?)
Alma makes that order explicit.
That has always moved me.
Because Moroni wasn’t just defending territory.
He was trying to keep a people from losing their spiritual center.
That feels bigger.
And I began wondering—
what if the Title of Liberty was a kind of sacred standard…
a visible reminder:
Remember who stands at the center.
Remember who you are.
Remember your covenant.
That sounds a lot like the themes we’ve been tracing.
I love that Moroni tore his coat.
He didn’t start with polished religion.
He started with a torn garment.
Broken cloth.
Lifted up.
There’s something deeply human in that.
Some scholars even see covenant symbolism in that torn garment act itself.
That’s fascinating.
But even without scholarship—
it preaches.
And here’s the thought that grabbed me:
Maybe that standard was like a spoke.
Raised upward—
calling scattered hearts back to Center.
That sounds very much like the Way.
And notice—
Moroni doesn’t rally people around himself.
He rallies them around a principle.
Around covenant.
Around God.
That matters.
Real leaders do that.
They point beyond themselves.
And isn’t that what we all need in days of confusion?
A standard lifted.
Not political.
Not tribal.
Spiritual.
Something reminding us:
Come back to Center.
Come back to Christ.
And then I thought of Mormon.
The father writing in collapse.
Holding center while civilization crumbles.
Moroni raising a standard.
Mormon preserving one.
There may be two whole sermons there.
Maybe two whole blogs.
Maybe someday.
And honestly…
I don’t think Moroni’s greatness was military.
I think it was orientation.
He kept turning people back toward what mattered most.
That’s rare.
And holy.
Maybe that’s what we need too.
Raise a standard.
Not with cloth—
with life.
Live in such a way
that people remember the Center.
That may be our Title of Liberty.
🌿 And maybe discipleship is simply this:
Hold to the rod.
Turn your tent.
And raise a standard.
All pointing to Him.
