The Quiet Power That Builds Zion
There is a phrase that appears again and again throughout the scriptures, though it is often expressed in different words.
One heart.
It sounds simple.
Almost too simple.
Yet perhaps it is the greatest miracle God has ever asked His children to accomplish.
Not one church.
Not one political party.
Not one culture.
Not even one opinion.
But one heart.
Zion Was Never Built on Uniformity
When the scriptures describe Zion, they never begin by listing buildings, temples, governments, or programs.
Instead they describe the people.
"The Lord called his people Zion, because they were of one heart and one mind, and dwelt in righteousness; and there was no poor among them." (Moses 7:18)
Notice the order.
They did not become one because there was no poverty.
There was no poverty because they first became one.
Unity changed everything else.
The outward society simply reflected an inward transformation.
Christ Prayed for This
On the night before His crucifixion, Jesus prayed one of the most remarkable prayers recorded in scripture.
He did not pray that His disciples would become powerful.
He did not pray they would become wealthy.
He did not even pray they would always agree.
He prayed:
"That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee." (John 17)
Think about that.
The Savior compared the unity He desired among His followers to the perfect relationship between Himself and His Father.
That is much deeper than cooperation.
It is shared love.
Shared purpose.
Shared life.
The Book of Mormon Shows What Happens
After Christ appeared in the Americas, something extraordinary happened.
The people did not simply receive better doctrine.
Their hearts changed.
The record tells us:
There were no contentions.
No envy.
No divisions.
They dealt justly with one another.
They had all things common according to their needs.
There could not be a happier people among all those created by the hand of God.
Why?
Because Christ had become more important than self.
When self becomes smaller, Zion becomes larger.
Babylon Teaches Division
Babylon survives by convincing us to separate ourselves into competing tribes.
Rich versus poor.
Conservative versus liberal.
This denomination versus that denomination.
Race against race.
Nation against nation.
Even within families.
If the adversary cannot make us wicked...
he will often settle for making us suspicious.
The scriptures repeatedly warn against contention.
Not because disagreement is evil...
but because contention hardens the heart until love can no longer flow.
Satan rejoices whenever pride becomes more important than people.
Christ rejoices whenever mercy becomes stronger than being right.
Charity Is More Than Kindness
Moroni taught that charity is "the pure love of Christ."
That love is not merely being nice.
It is seeing another person the way Heaven sees them.
Every soul carries scars we cannot see.
Every person is fighting battles we know nothing about.
When we begin looking through the eyes of Christ instead of our own, judgment slowly gives way to compassion.
And compassion begins creating Zion.
One conversation.
One act of forgiveness.
One sacrifice at a time.
The Sacred Pattern
Throughout the sacred records, the Creator continually calls His people into relationship rather than rivalry.
The goal has never been to produce identical people.
The goal is to gather hearts that willingly choose love over pride.
Many gifts.
Many stewardships.
Many personalities.
One Spirit.
One family.
Like many streams flowing into one great river, each life keeps its uniqueness while contributing to something far greater than itself.
The Poor Among Us
There is a reason the scriptures connect unity with caring for the poor.
You cannot truly become one heart while ignoring another person's suffering.
Whether someone is poor in money...
poor in hope...
poor in faith...
or simply lonely...
Zion notices.
Love always notices.
Perhaps "there are no poor among them" is less about economics than it is about refusing to let anyone carry life's burdens alone.
Zion Begins Long Before It Appears
Many people are waiting for Zion to arrive.
Perhaps Heaven is waiting for us.
Zion does not begin when everyone gathers in one place.
It begins the moment one family chooses forgiveness.
One neighbor chooses generosity.
One disciple chooses humility.
One heart reaches for another.
That is how every great work of God has always begun.
Quietly.
Almost unnoticed.
Like seeds growing beneath the soil before anyone sees the harvest.
The Invitation
Perhaps the greatest question we can ask ourselves is not:
"Who is right?"
But rather:
"Am I becoming the kind of person who could live in Zion?"
Would Heaven recognize my heart as one that seeks peace?
Would Christ find in me someone who lifts instead of divides?
Because the Kingdom of God is not built by winning arguments.
It is built by transformed hearts.
One by one.
Until many become one.
"That they all may be one..."
Maybe this is the quiet secret hidden throughout all scripture.
The Creator has never been trying merely to gather people into the same place.
He has been trying to gather them into the same kind of heart.
And when enough hearts choose love over pride...
Mercy over judgment...
Service over selfishness...
Christ over self...
Then Zion is no longer a distant prophecy.
It has already begun.
One heart.
One mind.
One people seeking Christ.
