The Nemenhah Remember Another Story
One of the remarkable things about ancient history is that different peoples sometimes preserve different memories of the same events.
The Bible contains four Gospels.
Each tells the story of Jesus from a different perspective.
Together they give us a fuller picture.
The Nemenhah Sacred Records invite us to consider something similar.
They preserve another witness concerning two of the most beloved prophets in the Book of Mormon:
Mormon...
and his son,
Moroni, whom the Nemenhah remember as Mohrhohnahyah.
Whether one ultimately accepts this tradition or studies it with thoughtful curiosity, the invitation is the same one Moroni himself gave.
Read.
Ponder.
Pray.
Seek the witness of the Spirit.
A Boy Raised Among the Nemenhah
The Nemenhah account remembers Mormon in a way unfamiliar to most readers of the Book of Mormon.
Rather than being raised solely among the Nephites, it says he was "numbered among us" from his youth before later being called to serve among the Nephite people.
That simple claim changes the way many passages are read.
Instead of seeing Mormon as belonging to only one nation...
the Nemenhah remember him as a bridge between two covenant peoples.
The Lord has often prepared His servants in unexpected places.
Moses grew up in Egypt.
Joseph served in Pharaoh's court.
Daniel lived in Babylon.
Perhaps Heaven has always prepared its greatest witnesses in more than one world.
Moroni... Mohrhohnahyah
The Nemenhah identify Moroni with the name Mohrhohnahyah.
They remember him not only as the final guardian of the Nephite record...
but as one who returned to the Nemenhah after the destruction of his people.
According to that tradition, the familiar farewell at the end of the Book of Mormon was not the end of his ministry.
It was the beginning of another chapter.
A chapter dedicated to preserving sacred teachings...
strengthening a remnant...
and preparing future generations for the gathering of Israel.
One Voice in Two Records
Perhaps the strongest evidence is not found in names.
It is found in the voice.
Read Moroni's final chapters.
Notice what matters most.
Faith.
Hope.
Charity.
The Holy Ghost.
Coming unto Christ.
Now read the teachings attributed to Mohrhohnahyah in the Nemenhah Sacred Records.
Again and again the same themes appear.
The heart.
The living power of God.
The Peacemaker.
Stewardship.
Mercy.
Zion.
Whether one sees these as the same prophet remembered through different traditions or as remarkably parallel witnesses, the invitation remains the same.
Listen to the voice.
Does it lead you to Jesus Christ?
The Keeper of the Center
In the Nemenhah tradition, Mohrhohnahyah is remembered not merely as a record keeper.
He is remembered as one who preserved a sacred pattern of life centered upon the Creator.
The Medicine Wheel.
The Four Pillars.
The walk of the Peacemaker.
Stewardship instead of ownership.
Council instead of domination.
Refuge instead of conquest.
Yet even these teachings never become the destination.
They point beyond themselves.
Always.
To Christ.
Just as Moroni's final words in the Book of Mormon end with,
"Come unto Christ..."
So too the Nemenhah witness continually invites the reader toward the Peacemaker.
The messenger changes.
The invitation does not.
A Bridge Between Peoples
One of the most beautiful ideas preserved in this tradition is that Mormon and Moroni belonged wherever the Lord needed them.
Among the Nephites.
Among the Nemenhah.
Among scattered covenant people.
Among future readers.
The Lord was preparing bridges instead of walls.
Perhaps that has always been His way.
The Kingdom grows whenever faithful people become bridges between nations, languages, cultures, and generations.
The Test Has Never Changed
It is easy to become fascinated by new historical claims.
But Moroni himself taught us the proper order.
Do not begin with curiosity.
Begin with Christ.
Every record...
every prophet...
every translator...
every teacher...
must eventually answer one question.
Does this persuade us to believe in Jesus Christ?
If it does...
listen carefully.
If it draws us toward repentance...
charity...
humility...
and the Savior...
then it deserves thoughtful prayer.
The Holy Ghost remains the final witness.
Another Witness
The title of this blog is not intended to replace the Book of Mormon.
It is an invitation to consider another witness preserved in the Nemenhah tradition.
Perhaps Mormon and Moroni walked through two worlds.
Perhaps they were remembered through two languages.
Perhaps Heaven preserved more than one testimony so that future generations might better understand the heart of these remarkable servants.
Or perhaps the greatest lesson is simpler still.
Neither Mormon nor Moroni ever sought attention for themselves.
They preserved records so others might know Christ.
They guarded sacred truth while civilizations collapsed around them.
They remained faithful when almost everyone else turned away.
And when their work was finished...
their final testimony was not about their own greatness.
It was about the greatness of Jesus Christ.
That remains the measure of every true witness.
Whatever else we discover...
whatever traditions we examine...
whatever questions we continue to explore...
may every honest search end where Mormon and Moroni intended it to end.
At the feet of the Savior.
For every sacred record they ever preserved...
was ultimately written...
in His name.
