When New Truth Arrives
What the Nemenhah Taught About Fear, Humility, and Expanding Light

There’s a scene near the end of the Nemenhah records that has stayed with me for a long time.
Not because it’s strange.
Not because it’s controversial.
But because of how peaceful the people responded when their understanding suddenly became larger.
And honestly…
that may be one of the greatest tests any spiritual people ever face.
📜 The Moment Everything Changed
In the story, two ancient travelers arrive at a great council among the Nemenhah people.
These are not ordinary men.
The record identifies them as Nephi and Mathoni — translated ministers who had walked the earth for generations, teaching and watching over scattered peoples.
They arrive carrying something unexpected:
A letter from a queen across the ocean.
A woman from the lands of Gaul.
Modern-day France.
And when the letter is finally read aloud…
the entire council goes silent.
Because the letter contains something the people had never imagined before.
The queen testifies that the Peacemaker — Jesus Christ — had family and posterity.
The record says the people were astonished.
Not angry.
Not violent.
Not defensive.
Just stunned.
🌿 What Happened Next Matters Most
This is the part that hit me.
The Nemenhah people did not react with fear.
They didn’t accuse.
They didn’t scream “heresy.”
They didn’t try to protect tradition at all costs.
Instead…
they rejoiced.
Why?
Because their faith was not built on controlling every detail of the story.
Their faith was built on the character of the Peacemaker Himself.
And when truth became larger…
their hearts became larger too.
That’s a powerful thing.
🕊️ The Difference Between Fear and Zion
One of the quiet messages inside this account is the contrast between two kinds of societies.
⚔️ One society fights constantly over power, kingdoms, authority, borders, and control.
🌿 The other remains soft enough to receive more light.
That’s the real test.
Not whether we already know everything.
But whether we are humble enough to grow when new understanding comes.
The scriptures teach this principle over and over again.
📖 “For behold, thus saith the Lord God:
I will give unto the children of men line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little…”
— Book of Mormon 2 Nephi 28:30
Truth often comes gradually.
And sometimes…
it stretches us.
🌱 The Natural Man Wants Certainty
Most people want a system that never changes.
A perfectly closed box.
A place where every answer is already settled forever.
But real spiritual growth rarely works that way.
The Lord constantly enlarged people in scripture.
Abraham.
Moses.
Peter.
Nephi.
Joseph Smith.
Again and again, God expanded their understanding beyond what they originally thought.
And almost every time…
the larger truth created discomfort first.
❤️ The Part That Broke My Heart
Near the end of the account, the Nemenhah knew something tragic.
They knew future Gentile nations would eventually come across the ocean and conquer their descendants.
And yet…
they still welcomed these distant people as brothers and sisters.
Think about that.
They chose grace even knowing future pain was coming.
That is not weakness.
That is Christlike strength.
📖 “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.”
— Bible Luke 23:34
The Peacemaker Himself taught that kind of love.
Love that stays soft even when wounded.
Love that refuses bitterness.
Love that sees family where the world sees enemies.
🌄 Maybe That’s the Bigger Lesson
Maybe the deeper question is not:
“Did every detail happen exactly the way we think?”
Maybe the deeper question is:
👉 What happens inside us when our understanding grows?
Do we harden?
Or soften?
Do we become territorial?
Or peaceful?
Do we cling tighter to pride?
Or move closer to Christ?
Because a Zion people must eventually become teachable people.
Not gullible.
Not naive.
But humble enough to follow truth wherever the Lord leads.
🕊️ A Thought I Keep Coming Back To
One of the things I love most about the Nemenhah records is this:
The people are constantly trying to become more peaceful…
more balanced…
more connected to the Creator…
not more controlling.
That spirit matters.
And honestly…
in a world constantly fighting over who is right…
that spirit feels very rare.
Maybe the real sign of spiritual maturity is not how loudly we defend our current understanding.
Maybe it’s how gently we receive greater light when it comes.
