πΏ Two Witnesses, One Path — Part 2 Alma 36:18–19 and the Nemenhah Records
πΏ Two Witnesses, One Path — Part 2
Alma 36:18–19 and the Nemenhah Records
One of the most beautiful passages in all of scripture is found at the very center of Alma's great chiasm.
Alma 36:18–19.
The turning point.
The hinge.
The moment everything changes.
Alma says:
"I remembered also to have heard my father prophesy concerning one Jesus Christ, a Son of God, to atone for the sins of the world."
Then he cries:
"O Jesus, thou Son of God, have mercy on me."
And then comes one of the most remarkable statements in scripture:
"I could remember my pains no more."
Everything changes when Alma remembers Christ.
Not church.
Not position.
Not authority.
Christ.
As I searched the Nemenhah Records, I did not find a word-for-word parallel the way we found with Mosiah 3:19.
But I did find something interesting.
I found the same pattern.
π Alma Remembers Christ
Alma's turning point begins with remembrance.
He remembers what he had been taught concerning Jesus Christ.
That remembrance changes everything.
Now compare that to this Nemenhah teaching.
πͺΆ Mahnti 5:14–15
Tsimohtl teaches that the Haymehnay will:
"testify of the truthfulness of all things"
and
"bring all things to your remembrance."
Porch Thought
I found that fascinating.
Alma's entire transformation begins when he remembers.
The Nemenhah teaches that one of the works of the Haymehnay is to bring truth back into remembrance.
Not merely information.
Truth.
Truth that changes a life.
π Alma Cries From the Gall of Bitterness
Alma cries:
"O Jesus, thou Son of God, have mercy on me, who am in the gall of bitterness."
That phrase has always stood out to me.
The gall of bitterness.
Not merely sorrow.
Not merely regret.
Bitterness of soul.
Then I found this.
πͺΆ Book of Sahnhehmpeht (Main Record) 31
"...far better to hear that his friend had died in the happiness of the Peacemaker and not in the gall of bitterness..."
Porch Thought
This was one of the closest phrase parallels I found anywhere.
The exact expression appears in both records.
The contrast is beautiful.
Bitterness versus the happiness of the Peacemaker.
Darkness versus redemption.
Despair versus hope.
π Christ Alone Saves
After remembering Christ, Alma cries for mercy.
He has reached the point where he can no longer save himself.
He needs a Redeemer.
The Nemenhah contains a strikingly similar statement.
πͺΆ Book of Mehnipahsihts 1:32
"Out of such suffering through which He alone is powerful to save..."
Porch Thought
That phrase jumped out at me immediately.
"He alone is powerful to save."
That is exactly where Alma arrives.
The center of Alma's testimony is not Alma.
The center is Christ.
When all other hope is exhausted, Christ remains.
π A Soul Renewed
Alma tells us:
"I could remember my pains no more."
The torment gives way to joy.
The burden is lifted.
The soul is changed.
Then I found this passage.
πͺΆ Mahnti 9:1–2
"The words of Tsimohtl did renew in us the spirit of grace..."
Porch Thought
I love that phrase.
The spirit of grace.
Alma experiences grace.
His suffering is replaced with peace.
His bitterness is replaced with joy.
The Nemenhah describes the same kind of renewal.
Not merely feeling better.
Becoming different.
π Truth Written Upon the Soul
One final passage caught my attention.
πͺΆ Mohmeht Ahkehkt 3:64–66
Things made the Peacemaker's through the Holy Spirit of Promise become eternal.
Truth is written into the soul and cannot be denied.
Porch Thought
After Alma cries for mercy, something permanent happens.
His experience is not merely emotional.
It becomes part of who he is.
The Nemenhah describes that same idea.
Truth becoming written into the soul itself.
A witness that remains.
A transformation that endures.
πΏ What Are These Records Teaching?
As I stepped back and looked at these passages together, a pattern emerged.
Alma remembers Christ.
The Haymehnay brings truth to remembrance.
Alma cries from the gall of bitterness.
The Nemenhah contrasts bitterness with the happiness of the Peacemaker.
Alma discovers that Christ can save him.
The Nemenhah teaches:
"He alone is powerful to save."
Alma is transformed by grace.
The Nemenhah speaks of renewing the spirit of grace.
Different records.
Different wording.
Yet remarkably similar themes.
And perhaps that is why Alma 36 continues to resonate with so many readers.
Because every one of us eventually reaches the same place.
The place where we discover that we cannot save ourselves.
The place where we cry for mercy.
The place where we finally remember Christ.
And when that happens, everything changes.
Next Study
In the next article we will compare 2 Nephi 25:23–32 with the Nemenhah Records.
Nephi teaches:
"We talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ..."
And what we found in the Nemenhah may be one of the strongest parallels yet.
