๐ฟ Two Witnesses, One Path — Part 4
2 Nephi 31:17–20 and the Nemenhah Records
If someone asked me where to find the clearest explanation of the Doctrine of Christ in the Book of Mormon, I would probably send them to 2 Nephi 31.
Nephi leaves very little room for confusion.
He teaches:
Faith.
Repentance.
Baptism.
The Holy Ghost.
Pressing forward in Christ.
Enduring to the end.
Simple.
Direct.
Powerful.
In many ways, this chapter describes the entire journey of discipleship.
As I searched the Nemenhah Records, I was surprised by how often the same pattern appeared.
Not necessarily the same wording.
But the same journey.
The same invitation.
The same destination.
๐ The Baptism of Fire and the Holy Ghost
Nephi teaches:
"Then cometh a remission of your sins by fire and by the Holy Ghost."
That verse has always stood out to me.
Notice that Nephi is not merely describing a ritual.
He is describing a transformation.
Something happens within the soul.
Now compare that to this Nemenhah teaching.
๐ชถ Mahnti 5:14–15
The Haymehnay:
"testify of the truthfulness of all things"
and
"bring all things to your remembrance."
The Haymehnay then causes truth to become part of the individual.
Porch Thought
Both records describe something more than information.
Both describe transformation.
Truth enters the soul.
The person becomes different.
That sounds very much like what Nephi calls the baptism of fire and the Holy Ghost.
๐ Walking the Way
Nephi teaches:
"And then are ye in this strait and narrow path..."
I love that phrase.
Notice that entering the gate is not the end.
It is the beginning.
Now compare that to a recurring Nemenhah theme.
๐ชถ The Way of the Peacemaker
The Nemenhah repeatedly teaches disciples to walk the Way.
Not merely to enter it.
Not merely to learn about it.
To walk it.
Porch Thought
That immediately caught my attention.
Nephi says:
Enter the path.
The Nemenhah says:
Walk the Way.
Different words.
The same journey.
๐ Press Forward in Christ
Nephi teaches:
"Press forward with a steadfastness in Christ."
That may be one of the most quoted phrases in all the Book of Mormon.
Now compare it with this Nemenhah teaching.
๐ชถ Mohmeht Ahkehkt 3:70–74
Children are taught:
Know the Peacemaker.
Hear His voice.
Seek His face.
Become united with Him.
Porch Thought
I found this one fascinating.
Nephi says:
Press forward in Christ.
The Nemenhah expands the picture.
Know Him.
Hear Him.
Seek Him.
Walk with Him.
Remain with Him.
That sounds very much like pressing forward.
๐ The Love of God and All Men
Nephi teaches:
"Having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men."
I have always found that interesting.
Love appears near the end of the process.
Perhaps because love is often the fruit of transformation.
Now compare that to the Nemenhah.
๐ชถ Hayneht Paynieht Ahkehkt
As people become aligned with the Peacemaker, they naturally begin to love and serve others.
Porch Thought
Neither record presents love as merely a commandment.
Both present it as the result of a changed heart.
The closer we draw to Christ, the more we begin to love as He loves.
๐ Endure to the End
Nephi teaches:
"If ye shall press forward... and endure to the end..."
This is not a sprint.
It is a lifetime.
Now compare that to another recurring Nemenhah theme.
๐ชถ Tsihohnayah Ahkehkthihm 13
The faithful are instructed to continue seeking revelation, continue walking in the Haymehnay, and remain true to the Peacemaker throughout mortality.
Porch Thought
The message is remarkably similar.
Keep going.
Keep listening.
Keep following.
Do not quit.
Remain faithful.
๐ฟ What Are These Records Teaching?
As I stepped back and looked at these passages together, one pattern became impossible to ignore.
Nephi teaches:
Receive the Holy Ghost.
Enter the path.
Press forward.
Endure to the end.
The Nemenhah teaches:
Receive the Haymehnay.
Walk the Way.
Hear the voice of the Peacemaker.
Remain faithful.
Different language.
The same journey.
In fact, this may be one of the strongest parallels I have found so far.
Both records seem to describe discipleship as a living relationship with the Savior.
Not merely believing in Him.
Following Him.
Walking with Him.
Learning from Him.
And continuing forward until the journey is complete.
Perhaps that is why this chapter has always resonated with so many readers.
Because every disciple eventually faces the same question:
Will I continue walking the path?
And both records answer in much the same way.
Keep moving forward.
Keep listening.
Keep trusting.
Keep following the Savior.
Next Study
In the next article we will examine Mosiah 4:2–3.
King Benjamin's people cry for mercy.
The Spirit comes upon them.
They receive joy, peace, and remission of sins.
And once again, the Nemenhah Records contain some remarkable parallels.
