๐ฟ Two Witnesses, One Path — Part 6
Alma 5:14–26 and the Nemenhah Records
This may be the strongest comparison we have looked at so far.
Not because the wording is the same.
Not because the phrases are identical.
But because the question being asked is exactly the same.
Alma asks:
"Have ye experienced this mighty change in your hearts?"
Every time I read that verse, I stop.
Because Alma is not asking about religion.
He is not asking about membership.
He is not asking about knowledge.
He is asking about change.
Has something actually happened inside you?
Have you become different?
Have you become more like Christ?
That is the heart of Alma 5.
And surprisingly, that same theme appears again and again in the Nemenhah Records.
๐ A Mighty Change of Heart
Alma asks:
"Have ye experienced this mighty change in your hearts?"
Now compare that to one of the strongest themes found in the Nemenhah.
๐ชถ Hayneht Paynieht Ahkehkt 3–5
Inner purification.
Becoming aligned with the Peacemaker.
Porch Thought
This may be the clearest overlap we have found so far.
Neither record focuses on outward conformity.
Both focus on inward transformation.
Alma asks:
Has your heart changed?
The Nemenhah asks:
Have you become aligned with the Peacemaker?
Different words.
The same question.
๐ Born of God
Throughout Alma 5, Alma repeatedly asks whether the people have been spiritually reborn.
Not merely informed.
Reborn.
The Nemenhah repeatedly teaches:
A transformed heart.
A transformed spirit.
Becoming true children of the Peacemaker.
Living the covenant rather than merely professing it.
Porch Thought
What strikes me is that both records are concerned with becoming.
Not merely believing.
Not merely belonging.
Becoming.
๐ Have Ye Received His Image?
One of my favorite questions in all scripture is found in this chapter.
Alma asks:
"Have ye received his image in your countenances?"
I love that question.
Because Alma is asking whether Christ has become visible in us.
Can people see Him in the way we live?
Can people see Him in the way we love?
Can people see Him in the way we treat others?
The Nemenhah repeatedly teaches that disciples should become so aligned with the Peacemaker that His character is reflected in their lives.
Porch Thought
That feels remarkably close to Alma's question.
Not simply believing in Christ.
Becoming like Him.
๐ Hearing the Shepherd's Voice
Alma repeatedly points people toward the voice of the Shepherd.
The Nemenhah repeatedly teaches:
Hear His voice.
Seek His face.
Receive guidance through the Haymehnay.
Be taught directly by the Peacemaker.
Porch Thought
We have seen this theme appear over and over throughout this series.
Again and again, both records point people toward a living relationship with the Savior.
Not merely learning about Him.
Listening to Him.
Following Him.
Knowing Him.
๐ Changed, Not Managed
As I stepped back and looked at all the passages we have studied so far, one thought kept coming into my mind.
Mosiah 3.
Alma 36.
2 Nephi 25.
2 Nephi 31.
Mosiah 4.
And now Alma 5.
The strongest parallels consistently point to the same truth.
God is not trying to manage people.
He is trying to change hearts.
That may be the simplest summary of Alma 5 I can think of.
Alma is not asking:
Have you checked the boxes?
He is asking:
Have you been changed?
๐ฟ What Are These Records Teaching?
If I had to reduce Alma 5:14–26 to a single Nemenhah concept, it would be this:
๐ชถ Hayneht Paynieht Ahkehkt 3–5
Inner purification.
Becoming aligned with the Peacemaker.
Because Alma's entire sermon revolves around one question:
Has something actually happened inside you?
Not:
Have you joined?
Not:
Have you complied?
Not:
Have you learned the language?
But:
Have you been changed?
That is a question every disciple must answer.
And perhaps that is why Alma 5 continues to speak so powerfully across the centuries.
Because sooner or later, every one of us must stand before that question.
Have I merely learned about Christ?
Or has Christ actually changed me?
Next Study
In the next article we will examine Helaman 5:12.
Building upon the Rock of our Redeemer.
Standing firm when the storms come.
And once again, the Nemenhah Records contain some remarkable parallels.
