The Shepherd Is Still Calling His Sheep
Perhaps one of the most comforting promises Jesus ever gave was also one of the simplest.
"My sheep hear my voice... and they follow me." (John 10:27)
Notice what He did not say.
He did not say only prophets hear His voice.
He did not say only scholars understand Him.
He did not say only those with years of experience can recognize Him.
He simply said:
"My sheep hear My voice."
That invitation belongs to every disciple who sincerely seeks Him.
The Shepherd Still Speaks
When Jesus described Himself as the Good Shepherd, He wasn't merely using a beautiful illustration.
He was describing a relationship.
Sheep learned to recognize the voice of their shepherd because they stayed close to him every day.
They trusted him.
Walked with him.
Listened to him.
The same is true today.
The more time we spend with the Savior through prayer, scripture, and quiet reflection, the more familiar His voice becomes.
Recognition grows through relationship.
Heaven Usually Speaks Quietly
Many expect God to speak through dramatic miracles.
Sometimes He does.
But more often, Scripture tells a different story.
Elijah found that the Lord was not in the wind.
Nor in the earthquake.
Nor in the fire.
After all of those came a still small voice.
The Lord has not changed.
His Spirit still brings peace more often than spectacle.
Truth usually arrives quietly.
It settles into the heart rather than forcing its way into the mind.
Learning His Voice Takes Time
No child recognizes a parent's voice in a single day.
Love grows through thousands of conversations.
Trust grows through experience.
The same is true with Christ.
Every sincere prayer.
Every page of scripture.
Every act of obedience.
Every quiet moment.
Little by little, His voice becomes more familiar than the voices of fear, pride, or confusion.
Discipleship is not learning to hear a stranger.
It is learning to recognize a Friend.
Not Every Voice Is His
We live in an age overflowing with opinions.
Every day someone claims to know the answer.
Social media.
News.
Podcasts.
Politics.
Religious debate.
Even sincere people sometimes speak with great confidence while sincerely being mistaken.
That is why the Savior invited us to know His voice.
The safest question is not:
"Who said this?"
But rather:
"Does this sound like Jesus?"
Does it invite us toward faith?
Toward truth?
Toward repentance?
Toward mercy?
Toward love?
The Good Shepherd never leads His sheep away from His own character.
The Holy Spirit Bears Witness
The Holy Ghost has one great mission.
To testify of Jesus Christ.
His purpose is not to draw attention to Himself.
Nor to any mortal leader.
He gently opens our understanding until Christ becomes more real.
Sometimes that witness comes as peace.
Sometimes as clarity.
Sometimes as quiet confidence.
Sometimes simply as a desire to become better.
The fruits of the Spirit are often recognized more by what they produce than by what we feel in the moment.
The Noise of the World
The world grows louder every year.
Fear shouts.
Pride argues.
Anger demands attention.
But the Savior still speaks as He always has.
Patiently.
Lovingly.
Without coercion.
His invitation is never forced.
It is offered.
He knocks.
He waits.
He loves.
And He calls each of us by name.
Be Still
Perhaps that is why the Psalmist wrote,
"Be still, and know that I am God."
Stillness is not merely the absence of sound.
It is the willingness to quiet our own hearts long enough to hear Heaven.
The Shepherd is still calling.
His sheep are still learning His voice.
The Holy Spirit still bears witness.
And the Savior is still nearer than we often realize.
So today...
before making another decision...
before accepting another opinion...
before allowing fear to take root...
pause for a moment.
Pray.
Open the scriptures.
Listen.
Because the One who said,
"My sheep hear My voice,"
is still speaking today.
The question is not whether He still calls.
The question is whether we will become still enough to recognize His voice...
and follow Him.
