Lord, What Would You Have Me Do Today?
Learning to Walk the Way with Jesus Christ

One Simple Question That Can Change Your Life
What if every morning began with one sincere prayer?
"Lord, what would You have me do today?"
Not next year.
Not ten years from now.
Today.
We often spend so much time trying to understand every prophecy, every doctrine, every mystery, and every controversy that we sometimes overlook the simple invitation Jesus extends to every disciple:
Follow Me.
That invitation begins one day at a time.
The Pattern Throughout Scripture
The Lord has seldom revealed an entire lifetime at once.
Instead, He has almost always given enough light for the next step.
Abraham left home without knowing where he would end up.
Nephi built a ship one piece at a time.
The brother of Jared simply kept asking what the Lord would have him do next.
The Twelve Apostles left their nets and followed Christ one day at a time.
The Lord is less interested in showing us our entire future than He is in teaching us to trust Him today.
Jesus Taught Us to Hear His Voice
Jesus declared:
"My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me."
(John 10:27)
Notice the order.
First...
They hear.
Then...
They follow.
Discipleship is not simply learning information.
It is learning to recognize the Shepherd's voice.
That is why one of the greatest prayers we can offer is simply:
"Lord, what would You have me do today?"
Sometimes His answer is profound.
Often it is beautifully simple.
Forgive.
Call a friend.
Serve your spouse.
Read a chapter of scripture.
Remain quiet.
Encourage someone.
Repent.
Pray.
Love.
One obedient step today often matters more than knowing tomorrow.
The Book of Mormon Teaches the Same Principle
After teaching the Doctrine of Christ, Nephi explains that we continue by relying upon the Holy Ghost.
We do not simply enter the gate.
We continue walking.

Moroni 10:3–5
Each teaches that Christ continues to guide His followers through the Holy Spirit.
The Nemenhah Sacred Records Teach Us to Walk the Way
One of the things I love most about the Nemenhah Sacred Records is that they repeatedly describe discipleship as walking the Way.
The emphasis is not on collecting spiritual experiences.
It is on faithfully following the Peacemaker through the guidance of the Haymehnay.
Consider these passages:
Second Book of Tsi Muhayl 8:44–45
The reader is invited to come upon the Way, receive instruction from the Lord, and submit all things to the guidance of the Haymehnay.
This is not merely believing.
It is walking.
Second Book of Tsi Muhayl 9:4–5
The Record encourages us to be diligent in seeking the guidance of the Haymehnay.
What better daily prayer could there be than:
"Lord, what would You have me do today?"
Book of Mohrhohnahyah 10:1–6
Before walking the Way, we are taught to become still enough to hear.
The order matters.
Stillness.
Listening.
Walking.
Book of Mohrhohnahyah 10:106–110
The Record teaches us to sing unto the Creator, seek the guidance of the Haymehnay, receive peace, and continue faithfully upon the Way.
How beautiful that our songs, prayers, and daily choices can all become acts of walking with Christ.
Extraordinary Experiences Are Not the Goal
Many faithful people have had sacred experiences.
Some have received dreams.
Some have felt the Lord's presence.
Some have witnessed answers to prayer that cannot easily be explained.
Those experiences are precious gifts.
But they are not the destination.
The destination is Christ.
If an experience brings us closer to Jesus...
it has fulfilled its purpose.
If it causes us to seek experiences more than we seek Him...
we have missed the point.
The Way has always been about following the Shepherd.

My Personal Reflection
The older I become, the less interested I am in trying to know everything.
I simply want to know Him.
There was a time when I thought spiritual maturity meant having all the answers.
Today, I believe it means asking a better question.
Not...
"Lord, tell me everything that will happen."
But...
"Lord, what would You have me do today?"
That one prayer has brought more peace to my life than chasing every mystery ever could.
If I walk with Him today...
He will know how to lead me tomorrow.
Perhaps that is what it truly means to walk the Way.
One humble step.
One answered prayer.
One act of obedience.
One day...
with Jesus Christ.
