πͺΆ The Iron Rod May Be a Spoke
A strange thought came to me after writing about sacred circles.
It wouldn’t leave me alone.
What if Lehi’s dream has been teaching this same pattern all along?
And then a thought came so simple it almost made me laugh:
What if the iron rod is a spoke…
and Christ is the Hub?
Now stay with me.
I’m not trying to turn Lehi into a diagram.
I’m just following a pattern.
And sometimes patterns teach.
We usually read Lehi’s dream as:
Hold to the rod.
Avoid the mist.
Get to the tree.
And that’s true.
But what if there’s more?
What if the whole dream is about learning how to return to Center?
Because that’s what struck me.
Everything in the dream moves toward one place.
The Tree.
And scholars have actually noted the tree is the symbolic center of the whole vision.
Center.
That word started opening things for me.
Lehi begins in darkness.
A dark and dreary waste.
How many of us begin there?
Confused.
Searching.
Wounded.
Praying for mercy.
That sounds a lot like real life.
And honestly…
that sounds a lot like the Way.
Even Hugh Nibley loved how the wilderness and mist imagery in Lehi’s dream mirrors a real spiritual journey.
Maybe the dark isn’t where we failed.
Maybe it’s where we learn to seek.
That touched me.
Then comes the path.
The rod.
The walking.
Holding on.
Pressing forward.
Walk.
Talk.
Listen.
Doesn’t that sound familiar?
That’s discipleship.
That’s the Way.
Then comes the mist.
And maybe this is where we misunderstand the dream.
We think the mist means something went wrong.
But what if the mist is part of the path?
Testing.
Purifying.
Learning what we trust.
Some of us have walked through mist.
Some of us are there now.
And maybe the Lord is not absent there.
Maybe He’s teaching us to keep moving toward Center.
And then—
the Tree.
Christ.
Love.
Presence.
Home.
And here’s where the thought hit me:
If Christ is the Center…
then what is the rod doing?
Maybe…
just maybe…
it’s a spoke leading us inward.
That thought about knocked me over.
Because suddenly the dream looked almost like a wheel.
A center.
A path inward.
A people moving toward life.
That’s a beautiful picture.
And then another layer opened.
Maybe the gospel isn’t mainly climbing a ladder.
Maybe it’s learning how to return to Center.
Again.
And again.
And again.
That feels truer to real discipleship anyway.
Because haven’t we all wandered…
and returned?
That’s the story.
And then I thought of something I’ve often said:
Don’t just hold the rod.
Find the Center.
That may be what the rod is trying to do.
Bring us to Him.
And I love this too—
Lehi doesn’t eat the fruit and keep it to himself.
He turns and calls his family.
Come.
Partake.
That may be Zion right there.
Find Christ.
Then help others find Him.
Simple.
Beautiful.
Enough.
Now I know somebody may say:
“You’re reading too much into this.”
Maybe.
Maybe not.
I’m just sharing a thought.
A pattern I started seeing.
And once I saw it—
I couldn’t unsee it.
The iron rod may be more than a rod.
It may be a spoke.
And Christ may be the Hub.
And maybe life with Jesus is learning to live from that Center.
πΏ That feels like good news to me.
